Shore Junction

At SJ we have a lot of young songwriters and musicians using the space, so naturally our band rooms are really busy!

To make booking our band rooms fair and easy, we're introducing a new 'Band Room Pass' system.

To get your pass, you'll just do a super brief training with one of our team. We'll make sure you know how the rooms work and how to use (and look after) our gear. This includes bands who are already familiar with the space. Once you've completed the training, we'll update your membership accordingly.

We have two band rooms – the 'Indie Room' and the 'Rock Room' – and each one is equipped with a drum kit, mics, amps and leads. We also have a recording studio, which works the same way with a 'Studio Pass'.

We're kicking off this system today.

If you want to book a band room, flick us a DM or give us a call on O21 222 5510. We'll book you in, do your quick training at the start of your session, and then you're good to go as usual!

SJ will be closed on Friday for the Matariki public holiday.

‘Matariki herenga waka’ is an adaptation of the proverb ‘Tāmaki herenga waka’ which means ‘Tāmaki the gathering place of many canoes’. Tāmaki is the name for the greater Auckland area, and today it is home to many people from across the globe. In 2026 the National Matariki celebration will take place in Tāmaki and will be hosted by Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei.

The phrase Matariki herenga waka honours the connection to the Tāmaki region while at the same time highlighting the relationship between Tāmaki, Matariki and canoes. Auckland is often referred to as the city of sails and Matariki is part of a large star constellation called ‘Te Waka o Rangi’ the canoe of Rangi. However, the deeper meaning of this phrase is, Tāmaki is a home to everyone and Matariki has a connection to all people.

Recently we held our quarterly Youth Work Hui at SJ, where local youth workers come together to connect.

The purpose of these gatherings is multi-layered: to grow our awareness of the opportunities available for rangatahi locally, to notice common themes in both the opportunities and challenges within our work, and to learn alongside one another.

This hui’s theme was modern youth language - slang, memes, brainrot, and broader youth culture. We also heard from Michelle and Asha from Breathing Space, who shared about their fantastic 'With Wonder' art therapy boxes and the training that supports them.

Two decades ago, the YES Disability Resource Centre opened its doors to champion inclusion. Five years ago, that same visionary spirit launched Shore Junction, a game-changing youth innovation hub that has redefined what is possible for young people in our community.

Together recently celebrated a massive double milestone! While YES has spent twenty years supporting thousands of families and providing affordable, accessible office spaces for vital organisations, Shore Junction has experienced an extraordinary five years of growth. In just half a decade, over 7,000 young people have joined Shore Junction, making it a thriving ecosystem of creativity, technology, and community. Alongside this, more than 1,000 youth have stepped into leadership, developing life-changing initiatives like I Lead, I.Drive, I.Employ, I.Power, I.Pride, and I.Empower.

To celebrate these parallel legacies of impact, a special event was hosted to honor the funders, volunteers, board members, staff, and generous supporters who built the foundation for YES and brought the vision of Shore Junction to life.

Hosted outside on the green at Shore Junction, the evening provided the perfect opportunity to celebrate the vibrant space itself and see our mission in action.

The event also marked the exciting launch of our Endowment Fund. This fund is designed to protect the legacy of both YES and Shore Junction, ensuring a predictable, sustainable income that guarantees our spaces and youth programs remain resilient through any future uncertainty.
