What if a qualification isn't about teaching people something new, but about recognising the capability they already have?

That's the approach at Buckleys Systems, the Auckland-based manufacturer whose particle accelerator technology is used in cancer treatment, semiconductor manufacturing and scientific research around the world.

For Assembly Technician Mike McMath, 50, the New Zealand Certificate in Manufacturing (Level 2) was the first time an employer had invested in formally recognising the skills he'd built on the job. His words say it best: "I feel like I have found my forever job."

With around 30 employees now working through Competenz-supported programmes, Buckleys shows what happens when workforce development is treated as a long-term business strategy, not a one-off training exercise. As their L&D Business Partner Lewis Peart puts it: qualifications don't replace experience, they recognise it.
