We are the rainbow student group at AUT striving to provide a safe and supportive environment. Linktree: linktr.ee/OutatAUT

Our aim is to provide social and networking opportunities for students and friends in a comfortable and friendly environment. We work closely with Rainbow Auckland, Rainbow Youth, and Uni Q. We have social gatherings once a week on Thursdays/Fridays, from 2pm - 4pm. We meet in our designated Rainbow Room, in WB215 (City Campus). The room is also available during the weekdays for you to relax, study, and meet new people. So join us if you are part of the Rainbow community, or our appreciated allies.

Tēnā koutou katoa!

We are pleased to announcethat we will be hosting our Sixth Annual Q***r Market next week on Tuesday September 8. From 11:00 to 4:00 that day, we'll be turning part of WG building (specifically the place opposite Newsfeed on level 3) into a marketplace with seventeen fabulous q***r artists and small businesses selling things to the AUT community, so come along and see what's on offer!

While we already have all our vendors confirmed for this year, if you'd be interested in running a stall yourself you're welcome to come along next year.

We're also inviting people to help out with setup and logistics on the day, particularly helping vendors move stuff to their stalls. If you'd like to do this, fill out the form in the poster's QR code (or linked in our bio).

Wanna yap about a niche topic to the class, or maybe learn something new?

We're hosting a presentation night (afternoon) in the City Rainbow Room (WQ460) on Friday September 11! We have the room booked from 12pm to 5pm, so feel free to come along and tell us about whatever you find interesting for 15 minutes. Or just listen to what others have to say!

You don't need to stay the whole time. We'll put out a schedule just before the event of when people are presenting, which may or may not be continuous for the whole five hours. Presenters are welcome to present via voice call or pre-recorded video if you can't make it in person, and we do have a screen in the room on which to show slideshows.

If you'd like to present, sign-up at the form linked in our bio or in the poster's QR code by midnight on Wednesday September 8. If you're just coming to watch, no sign-ups are needed.

Apologies for the short notice. If we have interest but people can't make the date, we might try booking again later in the semester.

Rainbow Hangout: Makeup!

Ever wanted to try out some makeup? We'll be bringing supplies out this week for anyone curious to try out some looks, but do feel free to bring your own too!

We'll be in the WQ Paper room on Friday August 14 and in the North Rainbow Room on Monday August 17, 2-4pm both days.

We hope you're all doing well!

And here's a logo page so this gets treated as a carousel. We will see if this affects the amount of exposure this post gets.

Rainbow Hangout: Art Gallery!

Want to see some fun art with other q***r people? The Auckland Art Gallery is only a five-minute walk from the City Rainbow Room, and general admission is completely free* for everyone, so we'd like to invite whoever is interested to come take a look with us this Friday!

We'll meet at 2pm in the City Rainbow Room (WQ460), on Friday July 31. The gallery closes at 5pm, but people can leave whenever.

*The general permanent collection is always totally free, but they do sometimes charge for special limited-time exhibitions.

As many of you have heard, the government has proposed a new Legislation (Definitions of Woman and Man) Amendment Bill.

We (Out@AUT) condemn this. Like the Treaty Principles Bill before it, this bill solely exists to push conservative talking points without regard to the harm it will cause or the fact that it is a solution in search of a problem that will achieve nothing of value.

So far, the Definitions of Woman and Man bill has been proposed and passed its first reading (out of three required for a bill to become law). It is currently being examined by a select committee. Crucially, this committee accepts submissions from the public, meaning you can urge Parliament to reject it!

You do not need to be a legal expert to make an effective submission, and even something short can have a real impact by demonstrating public opposition. But if you want to write something longer, you can draw on the serious negative consequences such as exclusion, discrimination and lack of legal recognition this will have on trans, q***r and intersex people, along with the need for stronger protection.

To make this easier, there will be a submissions workshop in WQ460 (Te Poro Āniwaniwa/the Rainbow Room) on Tuesday June 9, currently thinking 2pm, so you can make submissions with company and receive help with yours. We'll also be working with AUTSA to write an open letter to the government from AUT's Rainbow community, which will be discussed at the workshop.

Submissions for this bill close at midnight on July 2, so make sure to get your voice heard!

There are a couple other noteworthy bills accepting submissions right now also: one that would allow the police to issue anti-homeless "move-on orders" (submissions close July 2), and one that could make disability support a lot less accessible (submissions close June 12).

If all this is stressing you out, please do not hesitate to contact Elim and Nica (AUT's Rainbow team) for support. It's what they're here for.

A link to some information resources and guides to write a submission is in our bio.

Rainbow Hangout - North Study Session!

Apologies for the slightly shorter notice, but we've got one final event for the people up North this coming Wednesday (May 20)! With assignment pressure building up at the end of the semester, this one's a straightforward chill session to study with other q***rs or take a break from the trials of university life. Head to AE103 between 1:00 and 3:00 pm on May 20 if you'd like to come along.

And to everyone on all campuses, we hope your exam season goes well.
