Watch this space & save this date: October 17!

Are you tired of Aotearoa New Zealand’s politics being dominated by racism and xenophobia?

Cynical politicians like David Seymour and Winston Peters make our country a worse place to live for tangata whenua and the million migrants who choose to make it their home.

We’re sick of it, and we’re fighting back.
SAVE THE DATE: October 17!

Here’s the mission statement and members of our new coalition, All Workers United – stay tuned for more.

MISSION STATEMENT:
All Workers United Against Racism and Xenophobia is a coalition of unions, migrant groups and community organisations making a stand against racism and xenophobia in Aotearoa.

We believe our country is at its strongest when Māori, Pākehā, Pasifika, and migrant groups stand together.

Fundamental rights should not be removed from any group based on their ethnicity, nor should any group be discriminated against because of their country of origin.
Both NZ First and ACT, in governing with the National Party, have used racism and xenophobia to divide workers and communities through attempts to sabotage Te Tiriti o Waitangi and attacks on members of our migrant communities.

We will be marching peacefully on October 17 to protest this racist scapegoating and call on all those who want our elections to be about the issues that matter rather than the racist agenda of NZ First and ACT.

Join us!

10,000 public servants will be striking today, show your support by attending a picket 🙌

Hospitality workers know what it means to have to stand together to get a fair deal. We know that employers rarely give workers what they deserve without pressure, and that unions taking collective action is how working people win.

Today, PSA members are showing Aotearoa what workers can achieve when they stand together for fair pay, better service delivery, and for the public services that all of our communities depend on.

Unite Union stands with you, kia kaha, kia māia, kia manawanui!

National, ACT and NZ First have passed the Employment Leave Bill, cutting pay for over 200,000 workers, and cutting leave for anyone who is off work due to injury, sick leave, or works variable hours.

The cost-of-living crisis just got worse.

This coalition Government is trying to catch you out by making the enrolment cut-off earlier - if you are not enroled or your details are out of date after midnight on 25 October 2026, *you will not be able to cast your vote*.

Rose is a Unite member working at McDonald's. Many of Rose's coworkers pick up shifts outside of their guaranteed hours to make ends meet, working extra days to plug the gap between the hours they've been given and the bills they have to pay.

People working across hospitality work week to week like this. Currently, they get 4 weeks annual leave per year paid out according to their average weekly earnings (or ordinary weekly pay, whichever is higher). They don't lose any income from taking time to rest and see their loved ones.

But under the Employment Leave Bill, they will only accrue annual leave for their guaranteed hours. Anyone who's worked retail or hospitality knows that guaranteed hours are often a far cry from the reality of someone's work. These changes will do serious damage to working people already on insecure contracts.

Rose is a Unite member working in hospitality. She's been on ACC leave since December, and is getting ready to come back to work. Currently, she has the same balance of annual leave as anyone else. As she eases back into work, she can rest when she needs to. She won't be putting herself or her coworkers at risk.

But the Employment Leave Bill will mean working people like Rose won't accrue leave while on ACC. If these changes go through, people coming back to work after an injury will be pushed harder than ever. That puts everyone - working people, their colleagues, their customers – in harm’s way. The Employment Leave Bill is not for us.

We strongly oppose this proposed bill and the ideologically motivated hateful rhetoric it represents. Every person deserves to be able to decide for themselves what they are, whether that is in regards to gender, culture, faith or sexuality. Our members deserve this, so we believe in standing up for them to ensure that their voices are heard.

The New Zealand Council of Trade Unions Te Kauae Kaimahi will continue to stand in solidarity with workers in New Zealand who are transgender and gender diverse.

Senseless attacks on already vulnerable New Zealanders do nothing to bring us forward as a country.
