Award winning comic artist Jem Yoshioka popped in yesterday for a chat and signed copies of Folk Remedy – the first in a graphic novel series inspired by Japanese folklore and mythology. It was also a finalist at this year's NZ Book Awards for Children & Young Adults.
Book two: The Secret of the Night Parade, comes out in November and we cannot wait to jump back into the rich and beautifully illustrated world of the yokai! 🎉

We had a surprise visit from Greg MacLeod last week, author of Grumble's Bridge, illustrated by Herb MacDonald 🌟 We still have a couple of signed copies left.
Here's a gushing review from Roger 😁
"What is a tired troll to do? Herb MacLeod delivers a hilarious, playful take on Three Billy Goats Gruff. This is a fun read aloud picture book for parents, as they’ll have much to sympathise with the misunderstood Grumble, who becomes increasingly frustrated when his attempts to get a good rest are thwarted time and again. Herb MacDonald does a superb job with the illustrations and captures all the nasty and unsavoury qualities that we associate from Norse folklore. Bold splashes of colour and close ups of the troll’s menacing toothy roars and twitching hairy ears bring a lightness and humour that will appeal to young readers. This is a nicely subtle lesson about the outcomes of craving something so badly." - Roger

How To Survive on a Desert Island by Lorenzo Coltellacci & Alice Ourghanlian
"How do you survive on a desert island? With stacks of great books, of course. This gorgeously illustrated picture book is a heartfelt love letter to books and bibliophiles everywhere. Each page cleverly transforms books into everything you could possibly need to not only thrive on, but also escape from a desert island. From pitching a tent made of books to setting off on paper sails, it celebrates the limitless possibilities of the imagination. Endless adventures await with the simple turn of a page. The illustrations are so stunning, I still can't decide on a favourite."

"Just in time for Te Wiki o Reo Māori next week. Hīkoi is an inspiring Māori alphabet book for little (and not-so-little) activists. Its Te Reo Māori edition, Toitū, is also here to remind us of the power of hapori!"

Our dynamic sibling duo, Jack & Maggie, proudly repping Dazzlehands on their mum’s behalf. Luckily, Penny never has to choose a favorite child. But when it comes to read-aloud picture books, she definitely has a strong preference. And it's one of our faves too!
If you're a fan of Dazzlehands, you should also check out A Guide to Rocks, which won the top prize at the 2026 New Zealand Book Awards for Children and Young Adults, and He Taonga te Toka, which won Best Translated Book.
And let's not forget last year's winner, The Bomb! Many congrats Sacha Cotter and Joshua Morgan 🎉

We had the most magical surprise yesterday when Graci Kim popped into the shop and signed a huge stack of her latest fantasy adventure! 💖
Royalslinger is the epic conclusion to her middle-grade Slinger duology, which is set in a magically altered Seoul. There's magic spells, spectacular creatures inspired by Korean mythology, and a beautifully imagined world where your dreams (and nightmares) can literally come to life!
Dreamslinger also just won the Junior Fiction category at the New Zealand Book Awards for Children and Young Adults. Huge congrats Graci Kim-Cribbens 🎉
