A premium cut of imaginary saving, carefully trimmed of DIM weight, remote postcodes, peak, minimum charges and anything else likely to upset the spreadsheet.

Tenderloin is beautifully presented. Carrier A is 8% cheaper. Carrier B has sharpened its pencil. Procurement has conditional-formatted something green. Finance is already mentally spending the saving.

Then somebody releases the winning rate card into the warehouse.

Within weeks, the 8% is being eaten alive by cubic weight, surcharges, routing behaviour and a rebate threshold currently orbiting Neptune. The old carrier is still getting half the freight because Dave forgot to change the rules.

The WMS has stopped speaking to the OMS. The TMS is communicating exclusively through error messages. Two perfectly functional workflows have been “reimagined” into extinction and a new dashboard has been launched to monitor why the other dashboards no longer work.

Nobody panics, of course. This is transformation. The missed orders are “transition noise.” The exploding exception queue is “early-stage learning.” And the wrecking ball currently travelling through fulfilment is apparently unlocking value.

Packnic usually begins when somebody looks at 847 unpacked orders, a carrier cut-off in 23 minutes and one remaining tape gun and announces: “We should be fine.”

This person is never seen again.

Within minutes, bubble wrap achieves flight, every available surface is promoted to packing bench and somebody starts putting products into cartons based entirely on vibes and spatial optimism. The label printer is producing paperwork for orders nobody remembers picking, Quality Control has become a rumour and a cactus has somehow received a FRAGILE sticker.

By advanced stages, caffeine is infrastructure, “this’ll fit” has replaced cartonisation logic and the warehouse manager is packing orders in pyjamas because technically they never went home.

Common sightings include:

🫧 Bubble wrap entering neighbouring postcodes
📏 Carton selection becoming an emotional decision
