There’s a fair bit that needs to happen between getting a set of plans and actually starting on site.
In this episode of From Plans to Site, our Project Manager Josh sits down with Jeremy Chapman from to talk through that process, and why getting into the detail early makes such a difference once the build gets underway.

A Gold Award takes a team, and a few of us were lucky enough to celebrate together on the night thanks to .
Another huge thanks needs to go out to our NZ Builders team, our clients, CA Architecture, and all of the subcontractors, suppliers and partners who put so much into this build. There were a lot of people and a lot of work behind the finished home, and we couldn’t be prouder of everyone who was involved.

Our Manly project has taken home a Gold Award at the 2026 Master Builders House of the Year Awards, and it’s a pretty special result for a project the team put a huge amount into. From the beachfront setting through to the finer interior details, there was plenty to get right along the way, so we couldn’t be prouder to see this one recognised.
We love a challenge, and renovating while the clients are still living on site is definitely providing this.
At our ongoing Point Chev project, we’re carrying out a substantial renovation across both the interior and exterior, all while the family continues living in the home. For us, that means keeping communication clear, planning access carefully and making sure everyone knows what’s happening next.

We made use of laminated timber, or glulam, beams at our Manly project, and for good reason. They combine strong structural performance with the warmth of natural timber, making them well suited to open-plan spaces and exposed architectural features.
For those interested in the finer details like us, glulam beams are made by bonding multiple layers of timber together, creating a structural element that is strong, lightweight and more stable than solid timber. This allows them to span larger distances with fewer supporting walls or columns, which works particularly well for open-plan spaces and vaulted ceilings.
They can also be left exposed as part of the finished design, bringing warmth and natural character into the home. Manufactured to exact specifications and made from renewable timber, glulam offers a practical balance of structural performance, visual appeal and lower-carbon construction.

Joe has been part of NZ Builders for nearly a year, bringing strong commercial capability to the team as a Quantity Surveyor, as well as great energy to our office!
With experience in early-stage estimating and preliminary costings, he helps bring clarity to projects from the outset. He has also recently completed his Quantity Surveying diploma, adding to the practical experience he already brings to the role.
He’s already got a reputation for his willingness to go the extra yard, and has quickly become an important part of our team culture. Great to have you on the team Joe!
It’s the extra 1% that makes the difference.
Jesse takes us through what it actually takes to get from plans to site. A lot of the important work happens before the tools come out, from reviewing drawings and coordinating trades to resolving the small details early. And, as all tradies know, it’s that attention upfront that leads to a smoother build and the best possible outcome for the client.

“For all levels of ambition” is our motto. Sometimes, this means practical builds where we’re trying to help a client make the most of a small site. Other times, it’s a multigenerational beachfront property with bespoke cabinetry, American Oak joinery and custom wall panelling. We love both kinds of projects, but there is something special about seeing this one come to life.

Pene came on board as our first full time QS, and she’s been an absolute game changer for us over the last couple of years.
She has a strong background in both residential and commercial construction, and these skills have been invaluable to the pricing and management of our projects. She also has a great sense of humour, and we’ve loved having her as part of our team and in the office every day.
Getting the right people in the right seats is one of the most important things in business, and we couldn’t have got off to a better start with our QS team with Pene!

We completed this Point Chev project earlier in the year, and it’s easy to see how Harbour View Road got its name. From the outdoor shower to the walkway down through the garden, the harbour is never far from sight for the owners.
