Patina Over Perfection
There’s something incredibly beautiful about materials that don’t try too hard to be perfect.
At 5R Studio, we’re drawn to surfaces that feel lived in, layered and full of history — aged metals, worn stone, weathered timber, hand-finished plaster and finishes that become more beautiful with time.
Patina brings soul and authenticity to an interior. The little marks, variations and imperfections tell a story and give a space a sense that it has evolved rather than simply been decorated.
The trick is in the balance — pairing that raw, aged character with considered design, beautiful craftsmanship and contemporary pieces so the result still feels chic, sophisticated and timeless.

✨ Trish Clarke’s beautiful copper work, created in collaboration with Claire Nicholls, featuring delicate ceramic kawakawa leaves.
✨ Shiralee Sands’ Tree of Life, crafted in copper — a piece that feels both grounded and almost otherworldly.
The result is intentionally subtle and organic… art that doesn’t simply decorate the rooms, but creates an emotional connection to the beautiful outdoors of Langs Beach.

We were completely enamoured with this stunning pounamu beauty by Olivia Mittens, available from Waipu’s own Black Shed Art Space
What we love most is Olivia’s approach—stepping away from the more familiar Māori motifs and patterns to create something timeless and contemporary. This beautiful light-coloured pounamu, carved into a perfect circle and paired with an elegant flax weave, pays homage to tradition while embracing modern design and fashion.
It is a piece that feels both deeply rooted in history and wonderfully current. We are truly inspired—and incredibly happy to be the proud owners of this beautiful work of art.
