They won’t advertise this in the tourist brochures but Coal Creek Falls smells a bit gassy. This is from ancient coal seams in the area that release sulphuric fumes. It’s not dangerous and the falls are a great place to cool off after the walk

Finally I spotted one of these Werewere Kokako mushrooms in the wild. Named after the Kokako birds vibrant blue wattle these fairytale like fungi are endemic to New Zealand. The mushroom was in a challenging spot and the light was fading so i only had a short window to capture a photo. My friend shone his phone light while I used a monopod to steady the shot and get close
