Te Wiki o te Reo Māori | Celebrating Language, Culture and Wellbeing

Te reo Māori is an important part of Aotearoa's identity and plays a valuable role in supporting health, wellbeing, and connection.
This Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, we recognise the importance of language in helping people feel welcomed, understood, and respected when accessing healthcare services.

Throughout the week, our staff have been receiving daily te reo Māori reminders and learning opportunities, encouraging us all to practise words and phrases that support the use of te reo in our workplace. Every new word, greeting, and conversation helps strengthen our confidence and contributes to a more inclusive and culturally welcoming environment for our patients, residents, whānau, and community.

We encourage our staff, patients, residents, and visitors to join us in celebrating te reo Māori by learning a new word, sharing a greeting, or having a go at a simple conversation.

💉 Flu Vaccines Still Available at our Health Centre

It's been a tough flu season, with many people across our communities experiencing significant illness this winter. While we're moving into spring, flu is still circulating, and it's not too late to get vaccinated if you'd like added protection for yourself and your whānau.

Flu vaccinations are still available through our Health Centre.

✅ The flu vaccine is free for:
• People aged 65 years and over
• People under 65 with certain long-term health conditions, such as asthma, COPD, diabetes, heart disease, or reduced immune function
• Pregnant people
• People accessing mental health and addiction services, including those with certain serious mental health conditions
• All Children aged 6 months up to their fifth birthday

Vaccination remains one of the best ways to reduce your risk of serious illness from the flu and help protect those around you.

Did you know that regular cervical screening can help detect changes before they develop into cervical cancer?

If you're eligible for cervical screening, we encourage you to stay up to date with your checks. Screening is an important part of maintaining your wellbeing and can provide peace of mind.

If you need primary care outside of regular Clutha Health First hours, Ka Ora is here to help!

Ka Ora is the after-hours rural General Practice service for Clutha Health First, together with other rural General Practices in Otago and Southland. When our clinic is closed, you're not left to figure things out on your own. Here's what the service offers:
- A telehealth assessment with an Emergency Specialist Doctor
- Face-to-face care arranged at CHF during certain hours (excluding overnight)
- A referral to your nearest Emergency Department if it's needed
- Healthcare advice when that's all you require
Outside of standard hours, the General Practice is open by appointment (via Ka Ora) on weekday evenings until 9pm, and 9am–6pm on weekends.

Influenza is circulating in our community and like many families, workplaces, and healthcare providers, we are currently experiencing higher-than-usual levels of influenza illness.

This has also affected our staff, particularly this week. To ensure we can continue providing safe, high-quality care, some of our General Practice Nursing and General Practice clinics need to be rescheduled. If your appointment is affected, our team will contact you as soon as possible. If you do not hear from us, please attend your appointment as planned.

For most people, influenza can be managed at home with rest, hydration, and symptom monitoring. However, if something doesn't feel right, please seek medical advice.
If you need to be seen by a doctor, you may be asked to complete a multi-test before arriving and report your result. These tests can detect Influenza A, Influenza B, RSV, and COVID-19 and are available for purchase from most pharmacies at a small cost.
