The biggest barrier to speaking te reo often isn't a lack of words. It's the fear of getting it wrong. But mistakes are simply proof that you are trying.

Todayโ€™s focus is simple: Karawhiua! Give it a go.

That being saidโ€ฆhe wero kei te haereโ€ฆwe have a challenge for youโ€ฆ

Everytime you walk into a room with other people, say kia ora! Whether that be to the barista, checkout assistant, sales person, teacher, whฤnau member or wherever you are.

Use karawhiua to cheer on a friend, or try a phrase out loud at home.

Progress over perfection, always.

Whakataukฤซ: A general proverb or saying with no known specific author.

Whakatauฤkฤซ: A saying attributed to a known historical or ancestral person.

A whakataukฤซ is a traditional Mฤori proverb or metaphor that passes down wisdom, values, and life lessons through generations.

Think of it as a guidepost. It uses imagery from nature, history, and culture to offer insights into how we connect, grow, and support one another.

(Adorn the bird with feathers so it may fly)

This beautiful proverb reminds us that no bird flies without feathers, and no speaker becomes fluent without tools, practice, and community support. You don't need to know everything today, you just need enough feathers to take the next small step.

That being saidโ€ฆhe wero kei te haereโ€ฆwe have a challenge for youโ€ฆ

โŒ Kia ora whฤnau

โœ… Kia ora e te whฤnau

A super common mistake people make when greeting a group is saying "Kia ora whฤnau". If youโ€™ve said this before, donโ€™t sweat it at all. It's one of the most natural slips to make when you're starting out!

Hereโ€™s why adding "e te" makes all the difference:
๐ŸŽถ It keeps the rhythm: Te reo Mฤori flows like music. Leaving out "e te" makes the greeting sound short and choppy. Adding it brings back that natural, beautiful cadence.

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Avoids literal translation: Saying "Kia ora whฤnau" is a direct word-for-word translation of "Hi family", which skips standard Mฤori sentence structure.

๐Ÿ”— It acts as the bridge: When addressing a group directly in te reo, the words "e te" act as a respectful link between your greeting and the people you are speaking to.

That being saidโ€ฆhe wero kei te haereโ€ฆwe have a challenge for youโ€ฆ

So next time youโ€™re greeting the collective, give "Kia ora e te whฤnau" a spin!

Some other examples are:

- Kia ora e te iwi! (hello to everyone/tribe)
- Kia ora e te mฤrea! (hello to the crowd/general public)

Building on yesterday's kupu, tau (feeling settled), we know that feeling calm doesn't always happen overnight.

Thatโ€™s where manawaroa comes in.

๐Œ๐š๐ง๐š๐ฐ๐š๐ซ๐จ๐š is about resilience and inner endurance. Giving yourself grace when the words don't come easily. Learning te reo is a long journey, and staying strong hearted or resilient means remembering that every misstep is just part of growing.

When we practice manawaroa, we make room for ourselves and others to keep trying without fear. Haere tonu! Keep going!

That being saidโ€ฆhe wero kei te haereโ€ฆwe have a challenge for youโ€ฆ

๐Ÿ‘‡: Tell us what helps you feel tau (settled), and how you hold on to manawaroa (resilience) when learning te reo gets hard.

Secondly, let's uplift each other! Take a moment to reply to someoneโ€™s comment in yesterdayโ€™s thread with a simple word of encouragement:

Haere tonu! (Keep going!)
Kia kaha! (Be strong!)
Kia manawaroa! (Be resilient!)

One of our favourite kupu (words) here at Te Pae O Te Rangi is: ๐ญ๐š๐ฎ.

It describes that feeling of being settled, balanced, calm, and at peace within yourself.

When it comes to te reo Mฤori, so many of us feel rustled or anxious about making mistakes. But the goal is to feel tau in your own space, knowing that learning is a gradual process. Connecting with te reo takes bravery, and it starts with one word at a time.

That being saidโ€ฆhe wero kei te haereโ€ฆwe have a challenge for youโ€ฆ

What is one kupu Mฤori that you really like, or that makes you feel connected, or brings you joy or has significant meaning to you?

๐Ÿ‘‡Share it in the comments below so we can build a collective bank of reo together!

Hลซrล, kua tae mai Te Wiki o Te Reo Mฤori! Me whakanui ka tika! Ahakoa me kลrero i te reo Mฤori ia rฤ, he pai tฤ“nei wiki hei whakamaumahara he tino taonga tล tฤtou reo.

Hooray, Te Wiki o Te Reo Mฤori has arrived! It is only right that we celebrate! Although we should speak te reo Mฤori every day, this week is a great reminder of what a precious treasure our language is.

Here at Te Pae O Te Rangi, we recognise that many may feel whakamฤ (self-conscious) about speaking and learning te reo Mฤori, and at times it can feel scary. But learning te reo isn't about perfection. It's about connection.

No one starts out as a master, and every small step counts.

We thought we would kick off the week by explaining the meaning behind our ingoa (name):

๐“๐ž ๐๐š๐ž ๐Ž ๐“๐ž ๐‘๐š๐ง๐ ๐ข

Twice each day, at dawn and dusk, there is a moment when the world becomes tau. Settled, balanced and at peace. At the horizon, Ranginui meets Tangaroa, while the voices of our manu, like the tฤซeke, kererลซ and tลซฤซ, are particularly active, rising through the stillness.

Held within the ancient kลrero of Ruapehu, Paerangi speaks to the sacred gathering of mountains, manu, people and wairua.
Connected from maunga to moana, whenua to rangi.

It is the gathering that takes flight; the journey of manu and wairua rising toward the peaks of the maunga, before journeying beyond the veil.

Ever rising. Ever unfolding. Without end.

๐“๐ž ๐๐š๐ž ๐Ž ๐“๐ž ๐‘๐š๐ง๐ ๐ข

So just remember, wherever you are on your journey, we walk this path together as a collective.

Today as we join communities across Aotearoa and the world for World Su***de Prevention Day, we reflect on the theme "Changing the Narrative on Su***de." It is a call to move from silence and stigma toward understanding, hope and connection.

At Te Pae O Te Rangi this is the core of our daily mahi. We walk beside you on your journey up the mountain, dedicated to su***de prevention by building awareness, breaking down stigma and holding space for the difficult kลrero that needs to be heard. We believe in the power of Self-Mastery and the Protocols of Self-Valueโ€”Identity, Boundaries, the Freedom to Emote and Unconditional Loveโ€”as essential tools to help navigate the climb toward TAU (calm).

While global and local statistics remind us of the tragic scale of this challengeโ€”including the disproportionate impact on our Mฤori whฤnauโ€”we focus on the individual path. We know that every conversation matters and that su***de prevention is a collective responsibility.

To those currently navigating the steepest, most challenging parts of your climb we see you. To those carrying the heavy grief of losing someone we send all our aroha and strength to keep moving forward even when the path feels impossible.

If these words resonate with you please know that you are not alone. There are people here who care, who want to support your healing and who want to see you flourishโ€”to truly live in your own truth. You are the heartbeat of this kaupapa. Keep fighting, keep climbing and remember your inherent value. You are worth it!!!
