Phone Scams:

Hi Everyone,

We've had a number of Gisborne businesses targeted with the same phone scam over the last few days. The caller tends to have either a British or American accent and will try and explain that there is some sort of problem with your bank account or payments from your bank account.

The callers will attempt to install remote control software on your computer. This software often isn't technically a virus or malware, so anti virus software won't flag these.

If someone is telling you there is a problem with your bank account, best thing to do is hang up, and call your bank yourself. Better safe than sorry.

Call now to connect with business.

Have you heard of 2FA (two-factor authentication)? There are a lot of personal details tied up in online accounts. From banking to social media, to myIR.

2FA is an additional layer of security that helps to protect your online accounts. It’s a way of ensuring that it's really you logging into your account. And it's one of the most effective ways to keep attackers out.

You can think of 2FA like having two locks on your house. First, you unlock your front door using a key. But you can also have a second lock that requires a code.

Having 2FA for your online accounts is similar. First, you log in with your username and password. Then secondly, you input a temporary code (usually from an authentication app, or a text message with a one-off code).

If you do not have 2FA set up, we recommend adding it to your online accounts. You can start by checking out our website to find out how to set up 2FA for your myIR account - www.ird.govt.nz/two-step-verification
