Winter changes the way people read.
In summer, we're often outdoors, travelling, or squeezing information into spare moments. Messages need to be short, practical, and easy to act on. Winter feels different.
The pace slows. People spend more time indoors. There is more space for reflection, planning, and longer conversations. It's the season when I find myself reading articles I've bookmarked, revisiting reports, and finally making time for ideas that were put aside during busier months. I think our writing can respond to that rhythm.
Winter is a good time for stories with more depth. For explaining the thinking behind a project. For sharing lessons learned. For exploring the history of a place or the people connected to it. Readers are often more willing to settle in and spend time with a well-told story.
It's also a season for planning.
Many start looking ahead to the next financial year, reviewing what worked, what didn't, and what needs attention. Clear communication becomes especially important during these conversations. Not just to explain decisions, but to help people understand why they matter.
Perhaps that's why I enjoy winter writing.
There is less pressure to be quick and more opportunity to be thoughtful.
A good piece of winter writing doesn't need to shout. It simply needs to be useful, clear, and worth the reader's time.
As the days get shorter here in Tairāwhiti, I'm finding myself drawn to projects that allow a little more space for reflection, storytelling, and careful communication.
Does your approach to reading, writing, or planning change with the seasons?

- A few things I’m loving right now
If your website has been sitting quietly in the background, now might be a good time to take another look.

February had me on the move ✈️
It began in the City of Sails, Auckland, for an INNZ committee planning meeting at the beautiful Auckland Botanic Gardens 🌿
It ended in the capital, Wellington, attending Interpretation 101 at Wellington Zoo 🐾
Two cities. Two very different settings. One common thread was storytelling, connection, and helping people share places and stories with purpose.
Grateful for the conversations, the learning, and the chance to keep doing work that brings stories to life.

At the start of every year, I quietly turn my attention back to my website. Not in a flashy “new year, new me” way more like checking the front door of my business.
When you don’t have a physical shop, your website is where people first arrive, pause, and decide whether to step inside.
Over time, things shift. Pages get moved. Links quietly break. Images slow everything down. And sometimes the words that once felt right no longer quite sound like you.
So, I do a gentle reset:
- read through my pages to see if they still reflect what I offer.
- tidy up broken links.
- smooth out the flow between my About page, my work, and my stories.
- refresh testimonials so the voices on my site stay current.
None of this is dramatic but it makes a real difference to how a business feels online.
If your website has started to feel a little tired or cluttered, I offer a Website Audit + Content Refresh. It’s a simple way to bring clarity, warmth, and confidence back to your online home.
If that sounds like what your website might need get in touch.
