Thanks Glenn. I’m certain Godfrey was right. Wouldn’t it be great if provocative letters such as this could still be published without censorship and vilification?

With outbreaks of meningococcal B in many parts of the world I was reminded that in 2004, New Zealand GP Dr Mike Godfrey published a provocative letter in the New Zealand Medical Journal titled "Haemorrhagic meningococcal meningitis: is it scurvy?", NZMJ Vol. 117 No. 1200 on 20 August 2004.

Writing during New Zealand’s 1991-2007 meningococcal B epidemic, he proposed that the haemorrhagic symptoms of meningococcal disease might be a form of "acute scurvy" and argued that the rapid depletion of Vitamin C during a severe infection leads to a breakdown of blood vessel integrity, mirroring the clinical presentation of scurvy.

One mechanism for disease susceptibility might be vitamin C deficiency suggesting adequate levels on the diet may help ward off complications. He also suggested that the disease only becomes severe ("fulminating") when the liver is overwhelmed by toxins, which he believed Vitamin C could mitigate.

1. Commercial Diving: Mastering the Pressure of the Deep

When divers descend into the ocean, the pressure increases by 1 atmosphere every 10 metres. At 100 metres below the surface, the body is under 11 times the normal pressure experienced at sea level.

Without hyperbaric understanding and infrastructure, this would lead to:

Nitrogen narcosis (the “rapture of the deep” – causing disorientation and blackouts)
Oxygen toxicity
Decompression sickness (aka "the bends") — nitrogen bubbles forming in blood during ascent
Hyperbaric science solved this.

This technology made offshore oil rigs, underwater construction, and deep-sea cable laying possible — industries now worth billions.

2. Space Exploration: Training in Zero-Pressure and Emergency Readiness

In space, it’s the opposite: extreme lack of pressure. But the knowledge gained from hyperbaric research on how the body behaves under changing pressures was critical for early astronauts and still is today.

Hyperbarics influenced space in several key ways:
Pre-breathing Protocols: Before spacewalks (EVAs), astronauts follow a procedure similar to divers — breathing pure oxygen to purge nitrogen and prevent decompression sickness.
Spacesuit Design: Modern suits maintain micro-environments of pressure based on hyperbaric physiology principles, preventing ebullism (the boiling of bodily fluids in a vacuum).
Medical Safety: If an astronaut experiences a pressure drop or embolism-like event, protocols developed from hyperbaric medicine guide treatment — often using recompression simulation on Earth.
Training for Extremes: NASA and other agencies train astronauts in neutral buoyancy labs, often using pressurised environments to simulate the body’s reaction to changes in gas tension, pressure, and oxygen saturation.
In both underwater and space environments, the common enemy is pressure imbalance — too much or too little. Hyperbaric science gave us the tools to regulate that precisely. 25/12/2025

Perfectly put.

While former ministers escape accountability, medical regulators are actively punishing doctors who dared to speak out during the pandemic.

The Medical Council of New Zealand’s (MCNZ) website states: “Patients are entitled to information about their health and the care they are receiving.”

Yet MCNZ and Dental Council (DC) removed their requirement for their practitioners to uphold fully informed consent around covid vaccines. This contradicts their own fundamental principles.

We’ve been ordered to pay $100,000 for upholding medical ethics.

Medical ethics that included standing up against officials who falsely promised independent testing but later admitted New Zealand “lacked the ability” to test Pfizer products.
