The soft plastics you drop off at the supermarket might be holding vegetable seedlings you end up growing at home.

Those metal plant trolleys at Bunnings, Mitre 10 and Palmers, holding seedlings before they go on sale, are getting an upgrade. Good chance the panels are our 2Faced product, made from the same soft plastics you drop off at the supermarket.

The old ones were imported plywood that lasted 1-2 years. We're replacing about 18,000 of them with locally made 2Faced from recycled soft plastics instead.

In their statement they ask Coles to publicly report its plastic intensity, set real reduction targets, cut unnecessary packaging, and back extended producer responsibility, all before its November AGM.

We think this is a positive development. Investors pushing a major retailer to measure and reduce its plastic footprint is exactly the kind of pressure this sector needs more of. However, reporting a number only tells you how much plastic went out the door. It doesn't answer what happens to that plastic once it comes back through a collection bin, and that second question is the one we have been part of for more than three years in Australia.

A new study published this week in the journal Recycling looked at how Australia handles construction and demolition waste. Most of that recovered material ends up downcycled into low value applications.

They concluded that what Australia needs is "𝒂𝒏 𝒆𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒐𝒎𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒚 𝒗𝒊𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝒎𝒂𝒓𝒌𝒆𝒕 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒓𝒆𝒖𝒔𝒆𝒅 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒓𝒆𝒄𝒚𝒄𝒍𝒆𝒅 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒅𝒖𝒄𝒕𝒔." Recovery is only half the job. Real circularity needs somewhere for the recovered material to go that competes with virgin product on performance and price.
