๐ International recruitment can solve a skills shortage, but it can also create new problems if itโs not done properly.
Bringing talent into New Zealand from overseas involves much more than finding someone with the right skills. From understanding the realities of the role and workplace, to ensuring candidates are properly assessed and supported, the recruitment process matters.
Our latest blog, โDonโt Import Problems: Getting International Recruitment Right in New Zealand,โ looks at some of the key considerations for NZ employers recruiting internationally and why taking shortcuts can come at a cost.
If youโre considering international recruitment, itโs worth knowing what to look out for before you make the hire.

Over the years, I've seen international recruitment done both well and badly, and the difference always comes down to the same thing: process.
Bringing talent in from overseas isn't just about filling a vacancy. It's about getting the compliance right, genuinely matching the right person to the right role, and having real local support in their home country to back that up. Skip any of these steps, and you're not solving a skills shortage. You're creating a bigger problem down the line.
But for me, the job doesn't end when someone lands in New Zealand. That's actually when it matters most. Settling into a new country, a new job, and often a new life is a huge adjustment, and how well we support people through that determines whether they thrive or leave.
At the end of the day, this industry isn't just about placements. It's about people. Get it right, and you don't just import talent, you build a team that stays.

STMS burnout isn't a personal failing. It's an industry pattern โ and most people don't see it until someone experienced quietly walks away from the role.
We just published our take on what's really driving the pressure in the cone zone, and why "just push through" isn't a fix.

Note from our Director:
Something Iโve been thinking about lately: the STMS role is one of the most demanding jobs on any worksite, and one of the least talked about.
Constant decision-making, frustrated motorists, heavy compliance responsibilities and often working short-staffed can put enormous pressure on STMS and TC teams.
The key takeaway? Asking an already stretched team to simply do more can lead to burnout, disengagement and experienced people leaving the industry.
๐ก Workforce planning, rather than only recruiting when a vacancy arises, can help businesses build stronger, more sustainable teams and retain experienced people.
If your STMS teams are stretched thin, talk to the Success Group team about building a workforce plan that works for your business.

Great candidates have options, so why should they choose YOU?
Finding the right person isn't just about advertising a vacancy. In a competitive New Zealand job market, your employer brand can make the difference between attracting great talent and having a role sitting vacant for months.
So, ask yourself: What makes your business worth choosing?
๐ฟ Showcase your culture
Give candidates a genuine look at your people, values and what it's really like to work for you.
โก Respond fast
Great candidates won't wait around. Keep communication clear, timely and respectful throughout the recruitment process.
๐ฏ Sell the mission
Don't just list the duties. Show candidates what they will contribute to and why their role matters.
โญ Ask for reviews
Your current and former employees can be your best advocates. Genuine reviews help potential candidates understand what makes your workplace different.
Attracting the right people starts with giving them a reason to choose you.
