Matariki Rising Southside is a community-led event to celebrate Te Tau Hou Maaori or the Maaori New Year in collaboration with Glenview Community Centre, Hamilton City Council, HAMCIA (Hamilton Cook Islands Association), Community Waikato and Melville Intermediate School. Experience the magic of indigenous Maaori crafts and artwork, where local artists showcase their talents through mahi toi, visual arts, and traditional handwoven treasures. Savour a mouthwatering hangi feast and experience breathtaking kapa haka and cultural performances by local talent.
4 pm - 5:30 pm : Kai, crafts, merch stalls and mahi toi
5:30 pm - 7 pm : Stage performances
Gather your friends and whaanau as we come together to celebrate the cycle of life and new beginnings. And a huge ngaa mihi to Matariki Ki Waikato for their contribution towards our event.

Matariki Rising Southside 2025 is done and dusted and what a night it was. Another year another celebration that reminded us just how powerful it is when community shows up shows love and shows out.
Every year we get bigger and better but the real heartbeat of this kaupapa is YOU our people. And we couldn’t have done it without the incredible hands hearts and talents that brought this event to life. 💛

🌟 Matariki Rising Southside | Kai Stalls Line-Up! 🍴
Come hungry cause we’ve got a mean mix of kai waiting for you this Friday, June 13th at Mangakootukutuku College! From Taniwha Burgers and Polynesian plates to Indian curry, pork rolls, steam hangi and more 🍔🍛🌭
✨ A lot of these stalls are run by our local whaanau, so bring some cash to tautoko our people!

Unleash your creativity at our free mahi toi as we celebrate the spirit of the Maaori New Year! ✨
🌟 Raranga Whetuu with Tui 🌿
Come learn how to weave your very own whetuu (star) using traditional raranga techniques ✨
🌿 Raranga Bracelets with the Libraries Team – Learn the art of traditional weaving and create a taonga for yourself or someone special. The Libraries team will also have their moko kit on hand, so come have a go!
Workshops run until materials run out.
All ages welcome. Nau mai, haere mai e te haapori – let’s create, connect and celebrate together. 💫
