The Meteor
The Meteor Theatre | Not-for-profit black box theatre & arts space in the heart of Kirikiriroa
Supporting our creative community Est. 2014
The Meteor Theatre is a Black Box space located at 1 Victoria Street in Hamilton and is a flexible, affordable and supportive space for local and touring performances. After renovating and adding backstage facilities in 2017 The Meteor is now a modern performance space, future-proofed and soundproofed. The Meteor is managed by a Community Trust as an affordable and accessible performance venue. Our theatre operates on a risk share model of 20% of gross box office or a nominal daily hire rate. We are open to joint venture opportunities. Hire includes free hours of technical support for packing in, the use of our in-house equipment and we can help with ‘preferred supplier’ rates for extra technical hire. As well as that, we also provide dedicated marketing support for your event and our Front of House team are committed to providing the best support possible. From theatre performances to music gigs to hosting corporate events, The Meteor is a flexible space catered to a variety of events. The Meteor has a standard seating capacity of 114 on movable seating blocks, which can be expanded to 172. We can provide an audience capacity of 154- 205, with cabaret style tables and standard seating. For standing gigs in the Black Box, we are licenced for an audience up to 480. We can also host events in The Nancy Caiger Gallery, which is a light-filled space by the entrance to the Black Box. Curated by a rotating group of acclaimed artists from around the Waikato, The Nancy Caiger Gallery is committed to supporting the work of local and touring artists. The Gallery can have up to 100 people seated and 150 standing. Inspired by our staff whakatauki “Kia tika mai a muri, ka nui te mana o mua – If the back functions well, the front will gain prestige”, The Meteor Theatre is dedicated to working hard to serve a variety of events for the community.

Meet Mark. As an outsider he's a grounding presence, an affable foil to the simmering resentments and explosive arguments of the Griffith family. With humour and warmth, he connects with all the characters in the play.
The debut play by British Independent Film Award and Olivier award-winning actor Rory Kinnear. A domestic family drama set on Andy’s 21st birthday. The Herd is a humorous and touching look at the minutiae of living with severe mental and physical disability.
Directed by Gaye Poole

Paul Gittins is in the house! Bringing The Lover by Pinter to The Meteor this October.
Screen & stage credits include Shortland Street and A View from the Bridge (Eddie Carbone).
The Lover: A married couple who live a private kind of life in the middle of somewhere or other, comfortably off financially and seemingly happy. However, their s*x life has deteriorated and they decide to uncomfortably change that. But as you’d expect from a Pinter play, there’s rather more to it and as we get to know the couple better and their double existence, their refined deception- both are prisoners of the repetitive mechanisms of life. A dark comedy that explores illusionary behaviour and identity, but still preserves its timely relevance and uncontainable strength with an almost Pirandellian piquancy.

We're excited to welcome singer-songwriter Bryony Matthews and her latest performance Brain Storm into The Meteor this October.
Brain Storm is an immersive live music and storytelling experience exploring the realities of traumatic brain injury and the long road to recovery.
Created by Ōtautahi singer-songwriter Bryony Matthews, the show weaves together original songs, personal storytelling, and evocative visuals to share a deeply human story of loss, resilience, and adaptation. Drawing on Bryony’s own experience of life-changing head trauma, Brain Storm offers a rare and honest glimpse into the often-unseen challenges of living with an acquired brain injury.

Meet Brian. A grounding and quietly observant presence. Amid the family's intense friction he takes refuge in humour. He's reliant on the help of others for mobility, though remains philosophical "Bad luck, good luck. It's all chance."
Played by David Lumsden. The Herd is a sensitive, raw, honest play about a family falling apart – and pulling together – when life doesn’t turn out quite the way they imagined.
