ROOKIE STEGHS SHOWS PROMISE AT BLOSSOM 57!

Lucas Steghs from KartSport Auckland Mt Wellington ventured south to Hawke’s Bay for his first-ever big event - The Hawke’s Bay Heavy Haul Blossom 57! 🏁

Taking on the Vortex Mini Rok class in his Praga chassis, Lucas showed some fine racing skills and, more importantly, plenty of determination and persistence throughout the weekend.

A huge 10-race weekend is no small feat for a rookie, but Lucas tackled it all with admirable composure and kept pushing right through to the finish. There was even a little bonus adventure along the way, with Lucas earning himself a free ride on the 007 Paintball Recovery vehicle after a wee mishap! 🏎️💨

What a way to make your first big-event debut, Lucas! Great to see you out there, we’re looking forward to seeing where the karting journey takes you next! 😁🏁

🌸 Blossom 57 Race Recap 🌸

I never thought that in the year I started karting that I would be heading away to my first tiered national competition only 6 months and 13 days after taking part in my first race, so this weekend was a dream for me.

My main goal for the weekend was to learn what it's like to race in a national competition, what I need to do, what tech looks like, and what its like to race in that next level - and I did exactly that.

I am proud that on Saturday in one of the races my fastest lap was only 900th of a second behind the fastest lap. I am proud that I was racing amongst the pack. And I am proud that other than 1 race I had a very clean weekend.

Blossom was exactly what I hoped it would be, a chance to learn, a chance for more seat time, a chance to see another track, a chance to challenge myself and a chance to make friends. I walked away from the weekend with new skills, new ideas and solid friendships that ill take with me for life. Oh, and a new axle and hub after ending up in an incident Heat 7 🙈

8 months ago Mum and Dad said yes to me starting my karting journey, and they thought it would be slow and steady. Turns out I'm not too bad at this and I managed to get my Tier 2 license in my first 6 months of karting, which means I can compete in my first national competition, so tonight I signed up to head away to Kartsport Hawkes Bay to race at Blossom at the beginning of September.

This will be my first proper away race, and with 3 days of racing its going to cost Mum and Dad a bit, so I decided I would try and raise some money to help go towards my race weekend.

If you can, I would love for you to make a donation of any amount to help get me to Blossom. For every person that donates you will get your name, or your business name, printed on a T Shirt that I will wear for the whole weekend so everyone can see who helped get me there.

July Club Day KartSport Auckland Mt Wellington 19 July 2026, Race Recap 📝

What a day! Started the day trying to decide what tyres to go out on with a wet track ahead of heat 1, we went for slicks to see what happened. After a bit of a spin on the warm up lap I ended up at the back of the pack, which meant I ended up coming across an incident on turn 1 further up the pack, and ended up colliding with another racer who had been spun.

I thought my day was over but thanks to the massive effort my dad put in, with the help of Dan & Sam Evers and my Aunty Rachel (and a new steering column 🙈) I was able to race the rest of the day. A big thank you to Arlo for checking on me and coming to the medic with me.

As the track dried out I was able to put my skills to the test from the KartSport New Zealand Academy & Team NZ - Proudly Supported by SP Tools NZ academy day, and got to race midpack for a while for the first time - it was something ill never forget and has given me the drive to keep perfecting my skills on track to be able to keep racing with the middle of the pack.

I came away today with some PBs, a new steering column, a few cuts and bruises and a big appreciation for the incredible karting community who helped get me back out there, who checked on me and who supported me. Ill forever be grateful to be racing in such an amazing community.
