The Little Black Gallery celebrates jewellery, art and design objects. Everything is chosen because we love it and believe our customers will too.

The Little Black Gallery is a modern lifestyle and art space, home to desirable goodies from New Zealand and around the globe. Our style is eclectic, with a personal classical approach to great service. Our customers come instore, take a deep breath, and constantly say "wow" about how good our space makes them feel. Opened 2016, the gallery displays both local and national artists and is also a working studio. We aim to provide a friendly, relaxed environment in which to make a wide variety of quality art accessible to all. Well-established and new artists contribute to this. Little Black Gallery focuses on local and national artists and designers and offers original art, jewellery, prints, art blocks, ceramics and gifts. You can visit us in Kerikeri, Bay of Islands, on site at Treghan Luxury Lodge. As well as the hours shown, we are also available by appointment - please call 021 771 299 or 021 109 0092.

A LANGUAGE OF HER OWN | RACHEL BARBER

A glimpse of Rachel Barber, one of the artists joining us for New Light.

Rachel is a Northland artist whose distinctive work has found homes around New Zealand and overseas.

She describes having developed her own visual language through pattern, symbol and shape, often beginning not with a particular subject or place, but with a feeling she wants to convey.

There is a wonderful sense of continuation in her work. Rachel once told us that the way she uses pattern and line can create the illusion that a work might “go on infinitely if I had a large enough canvas.”
Here is our first glimpse of Rachel’s work for New Light. We’re delighted to have her exhibiting with us again.

A little colour for New Light

Gallery owner Anna Hamilton has been back at the jewellery bench, creating new pieces for our upcoming New Light exhibition.

Two quite different directions are taking shape. One brings together vibrant coloured stones and silver in Anna’s more eclectic style while the other is quieter and more elegant, combining freshwater pearls, greenstone and silver.

Both will be part of New Light when the exhibition opens at Little Black Gallery on Thursday 22 October.

We’ll be sharing glimpses of new work from our exhibiting artists as it arrives over the next few weeks.

Things worth keeping

Rina Ward has been collecting small treasures from nature since childhood, from pebbles and leaves to the shells she still gathers along Northland's shoreline today.

Through Nostalgem, those finds become something quite different.

Rina works with real shells, bone and botanicals, using techniques including hand-sculpting, kintsugi gilding and electroplating. She doesn't try to perfect what nature has made. The individual marks and imperfections remain part of each piece.

Her latest shell necklaces pair farmed pāua with a second farmed paua shell, kina or kota, each one selected and made by hand.

A little piece of the coast, transformed into something to keep.

Remembering Judi Soutar

We were deeply saddened to hear that Judi died yesterday.

Judi was an amazingly talented artist who gave so much to the art scene in our region. But she was also a true friend, loved for her kindness, her pithiness and wonderful sense of humour.

We feel very privileged to have known her, to have shared in her creative life, and to have called her our friend.

She will be very much missed.

𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐁𝐄𝐀𝐔𝐓𝐘 𝐎𝐅 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐌𝐀𝐊𝐄𝐑’𝐒 𝐇𝐀𝐍𝐃

There’s something quite different about living with something that has been made by hand.

It isn't perfectly identical to the next piece, nor should it be. The slight variations in shape, surface and finish are part of what give handmade ceramics their character.

You can see that individuality in Kristina Robertson’s ceramics. Each piece has its own character, while still being made to be used and enjoyed.

A bowl can still be a bowl. A vessel can still be used.

But when something has been thoughtfully made by hand, it can bring a little more pleasure to the everyday.

We have a selection of Kristina Robertson’s work in the gallery now.
