Language belongs in our communities.

Today we’re focusing on te reo Māori in the community and the many opportunities we have to use it when we come together, connect and share experiences.

Our images today explore book club, showing how something as simple as choosing, reading and talking about a book can become an opportunity to use te reo Māori.

Libraries, book clubs, community groups, sports clubs, cafés and local events can all become spaces where te reo Māori is heard and shared.

For our tamariki, these experiences help them understand that te reo Māori isn’t just something we use at the centre - it belongs everywhere.

Let’s keep creating communities where te reo Māori is visible, valued and part of everyday life.

Kōrero mai! Let’s kōrero!

Today we’re bringing te reo Māori into the workplace.

Our workplaces are another important place where language can be seen, heard and normalised. From greetings and conversations to meetings and phone calls, there are plenty of everyday opportunities to use te reo Māori.

You don’t need to be fluent to have a go. Every word counts, and every attempt helps create an environment where te reo Māori is welcomed and valued.

Some simple phrases to try at mahi:

Tēnā koutou – Greetings to you all
Ka kite anō – See you again
Ngā mihi – Thanks / acknowledgements

At our centre, we’re continuing to grow our confidence and use of te reo Māori so that our tamariki see it as a natural part of their learning environment.

Kia kaha te reo Māori.

Today we’re focusing on te reo Māori at home - because some of the most important language learning happens during the ordinary moments of our day.

Waking up, getting dressed, brushing our teeth, having breakfast, saying goodbye and getting ready for bed all provide little opportunities to weave te reo Māori into our everyday routines.

It doesn’t have to be complicated. Start with one word, one phrase or one greeting and build from there.

Try using phrases such as:

Ata mārie – Good morning
Kua rite? – Are you ready?
Ka pai – Good / well done
Pō mārie – Good night

When tamariki hear te reo Māori being used naturally at home, it becomes part of everyday life - heard, spoken and lived.

He iti te kupu, he nui te hua.

What a wonderful day outside exploring the magic of potion making!

Whaea Bryanna set up an amazing potion-making station for the tamariki, where they could get hands-on with colour theory, tipping and pouring, mixing, experimenting and discovering.

There were plenty of opportunities for the children to make choices, practise their coordination and let their imaginations run wild as they created their very own colourful concoctions.
So much learning, creativity and fun all wrapped up in a little bit of magic.

Today we’re taking te reo Māori out into the streets!

The 2026 Te Reo Towns kaupapa encourages us to make te reo Māori visible, heard and used in the places we live and spend time every day.

Our tamariki had a wonderful time learning about the te reo Māori at a parade and seeing te reo Māori celebrated throughout the community.

Parades, signs, shops, streets, parks and public spaces all provide opportunities for tamariki to see and hear te reo Māori as a normal and valued part of everyday life.

He reo ora. He reo mō tātou katoa.

Te Wiki o te Reo Māori is almost here!

Next week, from 14–20 September, Aotearoa will celebrate Te Wiki o te Reo Māori!

This year’s focus is Te Reo Towns – Tāone Reo Māori, celebrating the communities who have kept te reo Māori alive and encouraging us all to help it flourish into the future. Each day has an official theme, so follow along while we explore them all.

As an early learning community, we know that language grows through everyday moments - greetings, conversations, waiata, stories, play and the words we hear around us.

Today, we’re starting with the Māori names for our two main islands:

Te Ika-a-Māui – the North Island
Te Waipounamu – the South Island

Every place has its own stories, histories, people and language. This Te Wiki, we’re looking forward to celebrating the many ways te reo Māori is part of everyday life and encouraging our tamariki and whānau to use a little more reo every day.

He reo ora, he reo mō ake tonu atu.
A living language, a language for generations to come.

We may be at the end of winter, but those winter bugs have NOT received the memo! We appreciate our whānau supporting us as we endeavour to keep our wider community safe and well ☺️

Our kaiako work so hard caring for, supporting and nurturing our tamariki every day, so it’s lovely to give them a little something special to enjoy.

As we get ready for Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, our tamariki and kaiako have been learning some simple phrases in te reo Māori.

Today we’ve been practicing new phrases for Te Rā o Pāpā on Sunday!

We love finding meaningful ways to weave te reo Māori into our everyday learning and celebrations, helping our tamariki build confidence and familiarity with the language.
