Would AI recommend your business as a sustainable one when someone is searching the internet?
That was the question posed by our account manager Lyn Maner during a presentation to members and guests at the Rotorua Sustainable Charter Member Event last Tuesday. As a board member of the Charter, sustainability is something Lyn’s passionate about, and with nearly three decades helping businesses and stories get heard, she shared suggestions on how members can get their sustainability story heard across every platform, and importantly, found by both customers and AI.
Lyn’s presentation was followed by an equally passionate environmentalist, Kim McGrouther, senior sustainability advisor at Bioeconomy Science Institute (formerly Scion). Kim shared BSI's sustainability journey since 2009 and the amazing results she and her team have recorded of their Toitū Enviromark and carbon footprint certification.

Quick question: if someone asked ChatGPT to recommend a business like yours, would you come up?
We tested this with one of our clients, Secret Spot Hot Tubs Rotorua. A month ago, the answer was no. We asked ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini a broad, generic question, “what are some fun activities to do in Rotorua?”, and across all three, nothing. To be clear, that’s a hard test: dozens of attractions are competing for the same answer, not a niche search where Secret Spot already ranks well.
So we did some behind-the-scenes work on their website. No redesign, no new branding. Just making sure the site actually answers the questions people are asking AI tools.
Four weeks later: showing up as a recommended activity in 3 out of 4 AI tools we tested.
Google’s own AI search for that broad question is a work in progress but the Secret Spot team liked the results so much they updated their Google Business Profile and Tripadvisor listing with the same language themselves.
“We were aware of this and as AI is an evolving field that is changing daily and weekly, it was a case of understanding where to start.
