Multicultural Rotorua

The Multilingual Children’s Singing Group has produced another wonderful music video in honour of Te Wiki o te Reo Māori and Welcoming Week | Te Wiki o Manaaki.
The children were due to perform at our One Rotorua Many Cultures Festival at the Rotorua Night Market, but unfortunately the event had to be cancelled due to the weather.
Although they weren’t able to perform on stage, we are delighted that they can still share their beautiful voices and celebrate te reo Māori, culture and diversity through this special video.

One contribution of the Rotorua Multicultural Council to the celebration of Welcoming Week was to organise a Welcome to Rotorua seminar in collaboration with the Rotorua Library.

Nineteen speakers from organisations that support the settlement of international students and migrants in Rotorua spoke about the services they provide and had displays of brochures for the participants to take home for further reading and to share with their ethnic community.

There were a total of over 70 participants from Aotearoa New Zealand, Brunei, Chile, China, India, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Nepal, the Philippines, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, and Thailand.

Thanks to Yumiko, Leidy and Aurora for organising the event, to all the presenters, and to the participants who came together on a Saturday morning to learn more about their new home town.

🌏 WELCOME TO ROTORUA 🏡

Today, Neighbourhood Support Rotorua was pleased to attend the Welcome to Rotorua seminar at the Rotorua Library, hosted by the Rotorua Multicultural Council as part of Welcoming Week.

During my two-minute speaking spot, I shared the story of my own mum. She came to New Zealand 67 years ago, following a voyage that took three months.

She was on her own, a long way from everything and everyone she knew, but what made her transition into a new country easier was the kindness of her neighbours.

For me, that story is even more meaningful because I am her daughter, and Rotorua has been my home for my entire life.

It is a lovely reminder that the kindness we show someone when they are new to our community can have an impact that reaches far beyond that first welcome. It can help create a sense of belonging that lasts for generations.

A friendly hello, an introduction or a helping hand may seem like a small gesture, but to someone finding their feet in a new place, it can mean so much.

It was also lovely sharing a table with Min from Plunket, pictured here with me. Plunket and Neighbourhood Support may support people in different ways, but we both understand how valuable connection and a friendly face can be for families in our community. 💛

Thank you to the Rotorua Multicultural Council for bringing everyone together and for giving Neighbourhood Support Rotorua the opportunity to be part of the day.

Sometimes, the simple kindness of a neighbour really can make all the difference. 🤝
