Kia ora koutou,
We’re excited to announce Round Two of the Mickell Scholarship for 2026— an initiative designed to support coaches, officials, athletes, and teams across the Bay of Plenty. Following a successful first year, we’re excited to continue offering this opportunity to grow and strengthen our sporting community.
Mr John Mickell generously bequested a financial gift to Bay Trust to support various sports in the Bay of Plenty region, with the goal of increasing participation by removing geographical barriers to competition. Sport Bay of Plenty are administering the scholarships on behalf of BayTrust.
This scholarship will provide travel and accommodation support for regional, national, and international competitions (excludes school competitions), ensuring that financial constraints provide less of a hinderance to Bay of Plenty coaches, athletes and teams.
Eligibility:
Any young athlete, coach, official or team competing to represent their club, sub-region or the Bay of Plenty region aged 15 – 23 at the time of application and currently residing within the Bay of Plenty regional boundaries in the current year, 2026.
Any official or coach of athletes aged 15-23 currently residing within the Bay of Plenty regional boundaries in the current year, 2026.
Eligible costs must be for regional/national or international events during the period 12 October 2026 – 26 April 2027.
· Up to $750 per individual athlete and coach
For Teams: Teams must be aged between 15 to 23, have 80% of their team members permanently residing in the Bay of Plenty region.
· Up to $1,250 per team.
Barrier to participation: The geographical barrier must be across sub-regional or regional boundaries.
For example: You live in Whakatane (Eastern Bay), and the competition is in Tauranga (Western Bay).
Endorsement: If the individual athlete, coach or team is competing in a representative competition, an endorsement from the National or Regional Sporting Organisation will be required.
Eligible Items:
Funded: Vehicle hire, fuel costs, airfares, public transport costs, accommodation costs.
Not Funded: Uniform costs, food and consumables, vehicle wear and tear, volunteer services and costs.
Details of travel schedule to be provided, as well as quotes for service and accommodation where applicable.
All expenses claimed under this scholarship must be incurred between 12th October 2026 and 26th April 2027. Expenses outside of this timeframe will not be considered for reimbursement or funding support in this round.
Application Process:
Round 2:
Opens 10th August 2026, closes 20th September 2026.
Notifications by 12th October 2026.
