Are you thinking about embryo transfer this season? π΄
Did you know that there are two main ways to produce embryos from mares:
β¨ Standard embryo transfer (ET)
Your mare is inseminated, then 7β9 days later an embryo is flushed from her uterus and transferred to a recipient mare. This option is best suited to young, fertile mares using good-quality semen during the breeding season.
β¨ OPU/ICSI
Eggs are collected from the mareβs ovaries using ultrasound, then fertilised in the lab using ICSI - similar to human fertility treatments. This walk-in, walk-out procedure can be performed year-round and is a great option for older or less fertile mares, lower-quality semen, or mares that are still competing.
Embryos produced through either method can also be frozen for future use. βοΈ
OPU veterinary centres in New Zealand include:
β’ EquiBreed ARTβ Dr Lee Morris
β’ Equus Veterinary Reproduction and Consultancy β Dr Lucy Russell
β’ Rangiora Vet Centre Equineβ Dr Andrew Bailey
ICSI is performed at EquiBreed ART - approved ICSI centre for Holsteiner Verband, VDL Stud, GFE Groupe France Γlevage, Van Olst Horses, Baanpraktijk - ERC De Morette, Crynz, StuDutch.com and more....
Bookings are now open for October 2026!

π΄ Glamourdale: The Spectacular KWPN Dressage Stallion Ridden by Charlotte Fry π¬π§β¨
Few horses command the dressage arena quite like Glamourdale. With his striking black appearance, enormous presence and breathtaking movement, this KWPN stallion has become one of the most recognisable stars of international dressage. ππ
Ridden by British Olympian Charlotte βLottieβ Fry, Glamourdale has progressed from an exciting young horse into a World Champion, Olympic medallist and World Cup winner. ππ¬π§
π Bred for Dressage
Born in 2011, Glamourdale is a KWPN stallion by Lord Leatherdale and out of Thuja, a daughter of the influential stallion Negro. His breeder is Joop Rodenburg of the Netherlands, while Glamourdale has been closely associated with Van Olst Horses throughout his international career.
His potential was apparent early. As a three-year-old, Glamourdale became champion at the KWPN Stallion Show. π₯
But that was only the beginning.
In 2018, Fry and Glamourdale captured the World Championship for seven-year-old dressage horses, scoring 87.05%. His spectacular canter was already becoming one of his trademarks. ππ¨
π Becoming World Champions
Years of careful training eventually brought Fry and Glamourdale to the highest level of dressage.
Their breakthrough on the senior championship stage came at the 2022 FEI World Championships in Herning, Denmark. The combination produced outstanding performances to capture two individual gold medals, establishing themselves among the world's elite. π₯π₯π
Glamourdale's powerful extended canter became particularly famous. His ability to cover the arena with enormous, expressive strides makes him instantly recognisable to dressage fans.
π¬π§ European and Olympic Glory
The success continued at the 2023 European Championships in Riesenbeck. Fry and Glamourdale helped Great Britain secure team gold, with their Grand Prix performance scoring a personal-best 81.258%. Glamourdale received an extraordinary six scores of 10 for his extended canter. πβ¨
They later produced a stunning 92.379% Grand Prix Freestyle, earning individual silver. π₯
Then came the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. π«π·π₯
Fry and Glamourdale helped Great Britain win team bronze before returning for the individual Freestyle, where they scored 88.971% to claim another Olympic bronze medal. π₯π¬π§
π World Cup Champions
Another major title arrived in 2025, when Fry and Glamourdale won the FEI Dressage World Cup Final in Basel. Their victory added yet another prestigious championship to an already remarkable collection.
Behind those victories lies a partnership developed over many years. Fry first teamed up with Glamourdale when the stallion was six, and their journey together has taken them from young-horse competition to the biggest dressage arenas in the world. β€οΈπ΄
𧬠A Stallion With a Legacy
Glamourdale isn't only making an impact through competition. As a KWPN-approved keur stallion, his influence is also being felt through his offspring. KWPN has highlighted multiple Glamourdale descendants progressing into higher-level sport and approved sons entering breeding programmes. π§¬β¨
Power, elegance, personality and unmistakable presence have made Glamourdale a favourite with dressage audiences.
Together, Charlotte Fry and Glamourdale demonstrate what can happen when exceptional breeding, careful training and a special horse-and-rider partnership come together. π
From young-horse champion to World Champion, Olympic medallist and World Cup winner, Glamourdale has truly earned his place among the outstanding dressage horses of his generation. πππ

Just wrapping up ISEET - International Symposium on Equine Embryo Transfer and Technologies 2026 in Kentucky USA! It is always an honour to present our kiwi science internationally. EquiBreed ART was represented in 3 international studies! Dr Lee Morris presented our novel results on how we can use cell free DNA for embryo genetics in collaboration with Auckland University, EquiBreed ART was also a co-author on a paper with Prof Juan Cuervo-Arango about follicle factors influencing ICSI results and Dr Fabio Amoroso from Brazil presented a poster about our collaboration studying progesterone results in NZ! It is exciting to hear the results of the improvements possible in embryo processes from around the world and to bring home the latest tips and more collaborations! Well done to the ISEET team for putting on a fabulous confernce! Thank you to the New Zealand Equine Research Foundation for making this trip possible. Looking forward to the 2026 breeding season!
