Before registering, ask yourself:

▪️ Will the GST claims outweigh the extra admin?
▪️ Do you have systems in place to set GST aside?
▪️ Could you end up owing IRD because you've spent the GST you've collected?

GST can be a great tool for the right business, but it also comes with obligations.

Remember: the registration threshold is $60,000 in any rolling 12-month period, not a calendar year or financial year.

Should you register for GST before earning $60,000?

One of the first questions I ask is:

Do you sell B2B or B2C?

If you sell to other businesses (B2B), registering for GST can often make sense before you reach the $60k threshold. Your customers can usually claim the GST back, so it doesn't necessarily make your services more expensive to them.

If you sell directly to consumers (B2C), GST may mean higher prices for your customers or less profit in your pocket.

The answer isn't always straightforward, but understanding who you're selling to is a great place to start.
