It is with great sadness that we share the passing of a true club legend of Remutaka, Wellington Axemen and the Rams, Jimmy (James) Mei.
Jimmy was a Life Member of our club and made an enormous contribution to rugby, our clubs and the wider rugby community. He was a man who gave so much to the game and to the people around him.
Jimmy joined Remutaka in the mid 1990s, playing for both the Senior 1st and Senior 2nd teams, later sharing the field with his three sons, Ainsley, Damien and James.
Before his time with Remutaka, Jimmy was a proud member of the Wellington Axemen during one of the club’s most successful eras in the mid 1980s. He was part of the teams that won both the Swindale Shield and Jubilee Cup, helping cement his place in Axemen history.
Jimmy represented Wellington from 1983 to 1988 and was selected for New Zealand Māori in 1987, a tremendous achievement and a reflection of the quality of player he was.
His contribution to our clubs and to rugby will never be forgotten. Jimmy was a tough competitor, a great teammate and, most importantly, a man who meant so much to so many.
His legacy continues through his whānau, his clubs and the annual Hinaki Mei Axe, contested between the Rams and Wellington Axemen. The Axe is a fitting tribute to Jimmy and the special connection he had with both clubs, ensuring his name and contribution to rugby will continue to be remembered for generations to come.
Our deepest condolences go to Jimmy’s wife, Rose, his sons, Ainsley, Damien and James, his daughters in law, his cherished mokopuna, his siblings, his wider whānau and all those who had the privilege of knowing him.
Kua hinga te tōtara nui
(A mighty tōtara has fallen.)
Moe mai rā e te rangatira.
Haere rā, Jimmy.

...It’s a warm Sunday morning at Maymorn Farm. You can hear the tūī and bellbirds calling in the distance.
The house is quiet, the doors are open, and there’s no need to rush. The kids and the dog are out in the backyard chasing a ball, and there’s time for one more coffee before deciding what the day might bring.
Maybe friends come over for a BBQ. Maybe the whole family heads out for a walk through Tunnel Gully. Maybe nothing much happens at all - and that’s the point.
Sometimes, your surroundings have a way of changing your pace and your perspective. With more space around you, life can feel a little less hurried, the small moments stand out a little more, and there’s more room to simply enjoy where you are.
At Maymorn Farm, the real value of space is in what it makes possible. More room to live. More space to make memories.
