This morning we heard inspiring and motivating kōrero from governance experts including Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke, Prof. Rawinia Higgins, Helmut Modlik, Dr Mereana Selby, and Dr Mataroria Lyndon - nō mātou te whiwhi.

Dr. Mereana Selby (Ngāti Raukawa, Ngāti Porou) is the Tumuaki of Te Wānanga o Raukawa. Her work has centred on kaupapa Māori education, te reo Māori revitalisation, iwi development, and the transmission of mātauranga Māori. Over many years, she has contributed to the growth of Māori-led educational initiatives that support the aspirations of whānau, hapū, and iwi and strengthen pathways for future generations.

Dr Selby has worked across education, governance, research, and community development, with a particular focus on ensuring that Māori knowledge, values, and perspectives remain at the heart of learning and decision-making. She has extensive governance experience with iwi entities and was elected as an inaugural co-chair of Te Mātāwai.

She continues to work alongside communities, educators, and leaders to support initiatives that enhance cultural capability, language revitalisation, and sustainable development. Through her role at Te Wānanga o Raukawa, she remains committed to fostering education that contributes positively to the wellbeing and advancement of Māori.

Lady Tureiti Moxon (Ngāti Pāhauwera, Ngāti Kahungunu, Kāi Tahu) is a proven leader and advocate for Māori health, education and social justice both regionally and nationally.

Since 2012, she has chaired the National Urban Māori Authority (NUMA), representing affiliated urban Māori organisations across Aotearoa. She also serves on several community trusts including her own iwi of Ngāti Pāhauwera as a trustee and previously on their treaty negotiating team who successfully settled their claim in 2012.

Alongside her governance roles, Lady Moxon is also the managing director of Te Kohao Health, a marae-based health and community centre, where she has championed kaupapa Māori approaches to hauora and whānau ora since 2002.

Awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Waikato in 2024 for her services to Māori, Lady Moxon has long advocated for equity and resourcing to meet the needs of whānau Māori living in cities.
