The vision of Arapaoa Kiwi Trust is simple and inspiring: to welcome kiwi back to Arapaoa Island in the Marlborough Sounds/Te Tauihu-o-te-Waka within the next two to three years.
To make this possible, the team continues its work to remove stoats and feral cats, helping restore and protect the habitat kiwi need to thrive.
So far, the project has achieved some incredible milestones:
✅1,200 traps and 60 monitoring cameras are now in place across the island
✅Another 150 traps will be added from September to strengthen the network
✅More than 450 stoats have been removed
✅Contract trappers completed over 915 hours of work last year
✅A dedicated team of volunteers continues to support monitoring, website maintenance and day-to-day operations
Arapaoa Island is the second-largest island in the Marlborough Sounds, stretching 28km from end to end across 7,500 hectares of stunning natural landscape.
As the project enters its fifth year, Arapaoa Kiwi Trust has successfully achieved every operational goal to date and is one step closer to hearing kiwi calls on the island once again.
💚 We're proud to support this incredible conservation journey and the people helping bring kiwi home.

Matariki is a time for whānau, reflection, and gratitude, values that feel right at home on board. As the stars rise this winter, we're taking a moment to acknowledge the journeys behind us, those still ahead, and the connections that bring us together across the moana.
Mānawatia a Matariki. Matariki Herenga Waka – for everyone.

We work alongside the Marlborough Sounds Restoration Trust on vital wilding pine work across the Marlborough Sounds / Te Tauihu-o-te-Waka. Removing invasive pines gives native bush the space to return, protects wildlife, and helps keep these iconic hills and waterways thriving for generations.
Every time we sail through the Sounds, we’re reminded why. Caring for the places we travel through, and the communities who call them home, is part of who Interislander is 🐬
