SOLID
SOLID is a student team from Eindhoven University of Technology, developing iron-based hydrogen storage.
An innovative way of storing hydrogen that is safe, compact, and energy efficient. When metal powders are burned, energy is released and the metals turn into metal oxides, also known as rust. The energy can be used in, for example, big industrial processes or large scale transport. The metal oxides formed during the combustion are captured. Later, these can be reduced back to metal powder, by using green energy. This circular process thus functions as a sustainable energy storage system, in which energy can be stored in the reduction and released again during combustion. In 2018 we realised a lab scale proof-of-concept using an iron-based energy storage system. Currently we are working on taking this technology out of the lab, into the industry. Together with our partners we are building a scalable unit, that in early 2020 will demonstrate the first industrial application of metal fuels.

On June 12th, SOLID took a significant step toward real-world implementation by launching Project IJzerkracht. This new consortium initiative brings together twelve strategic partners to develop the Steam Iron Reactor 2.
Partners, students, family, and friends gathered to reflect on our progress over the past year. The event featured a keynote address by Jan Hubers of Rift, a multi-sector panel discussion spanning academia, government, and industry, and the official unveiling of Project IJzerkracht, highlighted by Patrick Groothuis and Bas Maes revealing the project's 20-foot container.
The evening concluded with networking drinks, where attendees stepped inside the container to experience the future of SOLID firsthand.
It was a wonderful opportunity to look back on an incredible year, and we couldn't be prouder of all our SOLID's.

On June 12th, we took a major step towards real-world implementation with the launch of Project IJzerkracht, a new consortium initiative to develop the Steam Iron Reactor 2 that brings together twelve partners, ranging from knowledge institutions to industry leaders.
The event began with a keynote presentation from Jan Hubers, who reflected on the journey from student innovation to large-scale implementation. We also showcased SOLIDโs progress over the past year, highlighting our technological development, feasibility research, and the conferences we attended. The program featured a panel discussion with representatives from academia, government, industry, and student teams. Together, they explored the role of student innovators in driving technology forward and identified the main challenges holding new concepts back.
After an insightful discussion, we looked at what the future holds for SOLID, and Project IJzerkracht was officially presented to the audience. The event concluded with Patrick Groothuis and Bas Maes unveiling the Steam Iron Reactor 2's 20-foot container. Following the reveal, attendees gathered for networking drinks, where partners, students, friends, and family could explore our different projects and get a look at the future of SOLID inside the container!
It was a wonderful opportunity to look back on an incredible year, and we couldn't be prouder of all our SOLID's!
