Amino acids and other substances that can be effective in protecting plants against cold stress and freezing are as follows:

Effective Amino Acid Types

1. Proline

Provides osmotic regulation by maintaining water balance in cells.

Protects cell membranes and proteins from damage.

It is very effective against freezing and drought stress.

2. Glycine Betaine

Regulates intracellular osmotic pressure.

Ensures continuity of cellular functions by maintaining protein and membrane stability.

3. Serine and Threonine

Protects energy balance by playing a role in cell metabolism.

Makes the plant more resistant to stress conditions.

4. Arginine

Strengthens cellular defense with nitrogen transport and metabolism.

Other Substances

1. Potassium (K)

Regulates cell water balance and increases plant resistance.

2. Silica (Si)

Strengthens cell walls and provides protection against cold.

3. Antifreeze Proteins (AFP)

Prevents cell fluid from freezing and stops ice crystals from growing.

4. Polyamines (Putrescine, Spermine, Spermidine)

Regulates cellular functions, protects membranes and increases resistance to cold.

5. Calcium (Ca)

Increases the resistance of cell membranes and reduces cold damage.

6. Ethylene Inhibitors (such as 1-MCP)

Prevents harmful ethylene production in the plant during cold stress.

7. Mannitol and Sorbitol (Sugar Alcohols)

Limits frost damage by regulating intracellular osmotic pressure.

Application Recommendations

Amino acids can generally be applied by foliar spray or drip irrigation.

These substances should be applied early (before the cold starts) to prepare the plant for freezing.

Combined formulations, especially the use of amino acids and potassium or calcium together, can increase effectiveness.

It is recommended to support with physical methods such as covering and heating systems to provide additional protection.
