Facilitated play transforms social learning.

In a recent session, our students engaged in a supermarket role-play while a special education teacher guided the interaction through targeted questions, prompts, and modeling.
Rather than remaining in passive or parallel play, the children were encouraged to take turns, make requests, respond to peers, and engage in reciprocal conversation. These small instructional supports may look simple, but they create meaningful opportunities for communication, problem-solving, and social connection.
This is the power of intentional play: when adults scaffold interactions, everyday pretend play becomes a structured opportunity for measurable social-skill growth.

Giving children time to respond is a simple yet powerful strategy. In a recent interaction, slowing down and resisting the urge to interrupt allowed a child to imitate words like "wee" "put" "i wav" (i love) and to participate in counting — all through natural play. For clinicians and educators, this reinforces that play-based approaches and intentional pauses can yield authentic language gains.
