A failed race attempt can feel a lot like heartbreak, but in a different way.
When a relationship ends, you're grieving someone. When a race falls apart, you're grieving a dream you've been carrying for months.
What makes it hurt so much is how personal the investment becomes.
You don't just train for a race, you build a part of your life around it.
You wake up before sunrise while everyone else is still asleep. You run when you're tired, when it's raining, when motivation is nowhere to be found. You say no to late nights because you have a long run the next morning. You spend countless hours imagining race day, visualizing the finish line, believing that all the sacrifices will eventually lead to that one moment.
You become emotionally attached to the goal.
You start measuring time in training blocks instead of months. Every workout completed boosts your confidence. Every successful long run makes the dream feel more real. You tell yourself, "This is the race where everything comes together."
Then race day arrives.
And despite all the preparation, anything can happen.
The weather may not cooperate. Your nutrition may fail. Your legs may not respond. Your pacing may be off. Or sometimes, for reasons you can't fully explain, your body simply doesn't have the day you hoped for.
That's what makes it so heartbreaking.
It's not just a missed time goal. It's watching months of anticipation, hope, discipline, and belief fail to unfold the way you imagined. It's crossing the finish line knowing how much of yourself you poured into the process.
For days afterward, the race follows you around.
You replay every split. Every decision. Every moment where things started slipping away. You wonder what you could have done differently. You think about all the mornings, all the sacrifices, all the quiet moments when nobody was watching and you were still doing the work.
But the biggest mistake after a bad race is to simply move on and forget it.
Not because you should stay stuck in disappointment, but because every failed race leaves clues behind.
The runners who grow the most are often the ones who are willing to sit with the discomfort and learn from it. They review the race honestly. They identify what worked, what didn't, and what can be improved. They turn frustration into knowledge.
Over time, the pain begins to change.
The race that once felt like a failure becomes a lesson. The heartbreak becomes experience. And the disappointment becomes part of the story that shapes the athlete you are becoming.
Because the truth is, a bad race doesn't erase the work you put in.
The discipline, resilience, and commitment you built during those months are still yours. The finish time may not reflect them, but they exist nonetheless.
And when you stand on the next starting line, you carry more than fitness with you. You carry perspective. You carry lessons. You carry the determination that comes from having your heart broken by a goal and choosing to chase it again anyway.
That's redemption.
Not forgetting the race.
Not pretending it didn't hurt.
But using every ounce of that disappointment to become stronger for the next one.

Marathon was never the name of his training plan โ it was the name of the race.
Richie came in with a half marathon already finished and a background in multisport, his most recent race a sprint triathlon โ short, nothing like 42.2 sustained kilometers.
What got him across wasn't a plan branded for the distance; it was eleven weeks of honest aerobic base, built for the athlete he actually was.
A plan doesn't need 'marathon' in its title to prepare someone for one โ it needs to start from where the athlete is actually coming from.
