🌋 The Facts on Kagoshima's Sakurajima Volcano 🇯🇵

​Located just 4 kilometers across the bay from Kagoshima City, Sakurajima is one of the most consistently active stratovolcanoes in the world.
​Here is what you need to know about living alongside a volcano:

​🗺️ It used to be an island: A massive eruption in 1914 released so much lava that it filled the strait, permanently connecting Sakurajima to the Ōsumi Peninsula on the mainland.

​📈 Constant activity: It experiences hundreds of minor eruptions and explosions every year. In fact, it averaged more than 1,000 annual eruptions between 2009 and 2015.

​😷 Daily ash routine: Local residents treat falling ash like rain. The city provides special yellow bags for citizens to sweep up and collect volcanic ash from streets and sidewalks.

​🎒 Safety first: Roughly 4,000 people still live directly on the volcano. Local school children wear protective helmets during their daily commute to shield themselves from any falling debris or pumice.

On our latest adventures for **Travel Unseen**, we've been watching the incredible local talent hit the shoreline. While the Philippines is world-famous for massive surf breaks like Cloud 9 in Siargao, there is a whole vibrant community of skimboarders and surfers right on the local beaches, tearing up the shorebreaks with absolute ease.

Watching these guys glide across the thin water, pop tricks off the incoming waves, and ride into a brilliant orange and purple sunset is pure magic. It’s a reminder that the best travel experiences aren't just about the famous landmarks—it's about pulling up a spot on the sand, meeting the locals, and watching them do what they love in their own backyard.
