GET TO KNOW OUR CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM!
Ever wondered what the letters and numbers on a library book mean? Here’s a quick guide!
The ETC Main Library uses the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) system to organize and locate library resources efficiently. Each book is assigned a call number that helps users identify and find it on the shelves.
Let’s look at this example: GC 355.0092 Z56 2006
• GC – identifies the General Circulation Section, where the book is shelved.
• 355.0092 – represents the book’s subject/classification number under DDC. In this example, it relates to military biography.
• Z56 – the Cutter number, which represents the author’s surname. Here, Z56 corresponds to Zinni.
• 2006 – indicates the year of publication.
Sample Book:
Zinni, Tony. (2006). The battle for peace: A frontline vision of America's power and purpose. New York, New York: Palgrave MacMillan.
So, GC 355.0092 Z56 2006 guides you from section → subject → author → publication year, making it easier to locate the book on the shelf.
Know your call number. Find your book. Read, learn, and discover!
