After Mindanao quake, solon pushes for urgent passage of bill to boost local disaster response
MANILA — In the wake of the powerful earthquake that jolted parts of Mindanao, Bohol 3rd District Representative Alexie Tutor is calling on President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to certify House Bill 833 — also known as the Disasters and Emergencies Management Act — as urgent.
Tutor emphasized that the recent tremor highlights the urgent need to strengthen the country’s disaster preparedness system.
The proposed legislation aims to empower local government units by upgrading the capabilities of Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Offices, as well as granting proper benefits and support to barangay first responders who are often at the forefront during calamities.
The measure is seen as a key step toward building more resilient communities and ensuring faster, more effective response when disasters strike.
Capitol plans ‘Festival of Festivals’ to showcase Cebuano culture; smaller budget eyed
CEBU CITY — The Cebu Provincial Government is set to organize a “Festival of Festivals” to highlight the province’s rich culture, creativity, and heritage, Governor Pamela Baricuatro announced on Wednesday, June 10.
During a press conference, Baricuatro shared that officials have already begun discussions on the proposed event, including its official name. She stressed that the activity will be mounted on a more cost-efficient scale compared to the previous administration’s Pasigarbo sa Sugbo, ensuring resources are used wisely while still celebrating the distinct traditions of Cebu’s towns and cities.
The event aims to gather the best festival performances from across the province, offering both locals and visitors a vibrant display of Cebu’s diverse identity.
JOLLIBEE CONFIRMS ALL GENSAN EMPLOYEES SAFE DESPITE STORE COLLAPSE IN 7.8 QUAKE
GENERAL SANTOS CITY— Jollibee Foods Corporation has confirmed that all its employees in General Santos City are safe and accounted for, even as one of its stores collapsed during the powerful magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck Southern Mindanao on Monday, June 8.
In an official statement, the fast-food giant assured the public: “All Jollibee team members in our General Santos stores have been accounted for and are safe. At this time, we have received no reports of injuries in our stores located in the affected areas.”
Footage widely circulated online showed a Jollibee outlet crumbling as the strong tremor hit, causing alarm over the safety of staff and customers.
As of the latest update from the Office of Civil Defense, the earthquake has left at least 19 people dead and over 100 injured, with widespread damage reported across the region.
Jollibee added it continues to monitor the situation closely and coordinate with local authorities. “Our hearts go out to all those affected by this unfortunate event. During this time, the safety of our customers and store team members remains our highest priority. We stand with our communities during this difficult time,” the company said.

DEATH TOLL CLIMBS TO 37 IN MINDANAO QUAKE
The fatalities from the magnitude 7.8 earthquake striking Mindanao have risen to 37, according to the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) as of 6:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 9, 2026.
Officials warned the casualty count may still increase, as search, rescue, and retrieval operations continue in all affected communities.

“Include our brothers and sisters in General Santos City and neighboring areas affected by the earthquake in our prayers,” Congresswoman Tutor urged.
She asked everyone to pray for their safety, strength, and hope amid this difficult time. “Let us pray for their safety, strength, and hope in this time of hardship. May the Lord grant them protection, comfort, and strength to overcome the challenges they are facing now,” she added.

CONG. LEANDRO LEGARDA LEVISTE DONATES PORTION OF SALARY; URGES CONGRESS TO RAISE ₱300M FOR MINDANAO QUAKE VICTIMS
MANILA — Batangas 1st District Representative Leandro Legarda Leviste has pledged to donate ₱1 million from his own salary to aid communities affected by the powerful earthquake in Mindanao.
“I informed Congress that I will deduct ₱1 million from my salary to help those affected by the earthquake in Mindanao,” Leviste stated.
The lawmaker also called on his fellow legislators to follow suit, expressing hope that combined contributions—including funds drawn from Congress’ internal budget—could raise more than ₱300 million in total assistance for affected residents.
“I hope others will do the same. If we pool resources, drawing also from Congress’ internal budget, we can raise over ₱300 million to support our fellow Filipinos in need,” he added.
The proposed fund aims to provide immediate relief, rehabilitation support, and essential supplies to families and communities devastated by the recent magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck the region.
