Some useful information about the Save Carbon Public Market & Sitio Bato Movement.

What's the threat today?

The redevelopment of the Carbon District is being implemented through a 50-year Joint Venture Agreement between Cebu City and Cebu2World Development Inc., with an option to extend for another 25 years.

The project envisions a mixed-use district with commercial, retail, tourism, and heritage components alongside new market facilities.

Community groups have expressed concern that redevelopment may prioritize commercial interests over the needs of existing vendors, workers, and residents if meaningful participation and protections are not ensured.

The redevelopment is a long-term public-private partnership.

In 2021, Cebu City entered into a β‚±5.5-billion Joint Venture Agreement (JVA) with Cebu2World Development Inc. (a Megawide subsidiary) to redevelop the Carbon District. The agreement gives the private partner the right to develop and operate the project for 50 years, with an option to extend for another 25 years. The redevelopment includes new market buildings alongside commercial, retail, tourism, and mixed-use developments. (Philippine News Agency)

Why does this matter?

A public market is more than a commercial space.

It supports:
- Affordable food for everyone
- Farmers, vendors, porters, and market workers
- Cebu's living heritage and culture
- Everyday relationships between communities and consumers (mga suki)

When we protect public markets, we also protect livelihoods, food security, and the right to accessible public spaces.

What are they asking for?

The Save Carbon Public Market Movement is not against development.
They support development that is:
βœ” Public and accountable
βœ” Inclusive and participatory
βœ” Heritage-sensitive
βœ” Protective of livelihoods
βœ” Affordable for vendors and consumers

They also stand with the residents of Sitio Bato, who are calling for on-site, people-centred development.

Why are we organizing Kumbira para sa Merkado?

Carbon Public Market has long been a place where food, work, culture, and community come together. Today, vendors, workers, residents, and supporters are advocating for a future where Carbon rema

Scenes from Kinaiyahan Kamp ✨🌿

Grateful to have joined Kinaiyahan Kamp organized by - a day of learning, play, storytelling, cooking, and reconnecting with nature.

For our cooking session, we introduced Binakol, a traditional Filipino chicken soup from our neighbors in Iloilo and the Visayas. This dish demonstrates the many uses of lubi (coconut), from coconut water as broth to coconut flesh as an ingredient, while highlighting locally available produce (tangyad/lemongrass, kamunggay, etc) and indigenous food knowledge. Through cooking together, we shared how food can teach us about sustainability, resourcefulness, and our connection to place.

Our LuBingo was so fun thanks to Teacher Earl and Ate Nem! We got to know the many uses of the coconut tree, not only in cooking but also in our daily life like kudkuran, silhig and lampaso.

Thank you to Maya Learning Space, the facilitators, volunteers, parents, and and the kids!
