Some stories remain unseen until a journalist asks questions, follows the evidence, and gives people the chance to be heard.

Journalism goes beyond telling us what happened. It examines what has been overlooked, verifies what is true, and brings buried stories into public view. That work helps us understand not only the headlines but also the people and realities behind them.

Today, we recognize the journalists who keep doing that work, even when the story is difficult to tell.

SEPTEMBER 28 | FEAST OF SAN LORENZO RUIZ

Today, the Church joyfully commemorates the Feast of Saint Lorenzo Ruiz, the first Filipino canonized saint and a profound witness of faith, courage, and fidelity to Christ.

Born in Binondo, Manila, Saint Lorenzo Ruiz lived an ordinary life as a husband, father, and member of his community. Yet, when faced with persecution and the demand to renounce his Christian faith, he remained steadfast in his trust in God. Together with his companions, he endured suffering with unwavering courage, offering his life as a testimony to the faith he professed.

Saint Lorenzoโ€™s life reminds us that holiness is not reserved for those who live extraordinary lives in the eyes of the world. Rather, holiness begins with faithfulness to God in the ordinary circumstances of life and becomes most evident when that faith is tested. His witness calls us to remain firm in our beliefs, faithful in our responsibilities, and courageous in following Christ even when doing so requires sacrifice.

As Filipinos, the life of Saint Lorenzo Ruiz holds a special place in our Christian heritage. His example reminds us that our faith is a precious gift entrusted to usโ€”one that we are called not only to receive, but also to live, proclaim, and preserve through our words and actions.

May Saint Lorenzo Ruiz intercede for the Filipino people, especially for the youth, families, and all those who are experiencing trials in their journey of faith. May his courage strengthen us when we are faced with difficulties, his perseverance inspire us when we are tempted to give up, and his love for Christ remind us of the lasting hope found in faithful discipleship.

May we, through his intercession, continue to grow in faith, remain steadfast in our commitment to Christ, and become witnesses of His love in our homes, communities, and society.

San Lorenzo Ruiz, Ipanalangin mo kami.
