Demonstrating its commitment to fostering a strong culture of research and innovation, the Graduate School of Davao del Sur State College (DSSC) successfully conducted the seminar-workshop, "Bridging Research Gaps: A Seminar-Workshop on Literature Mapping, Methodology Design, and Research Portfolio Development" on July 4, 2026, at the SMART Hub, Davao del Sur State College.
The activity was conducted under the Advanced Seminar in Educational Management Research and Practice course of Dr. Queenie Lyn G. Almerez, which is designed to equip doctoral students with advanced competencies in conducting rigorous, theory-informed, and practice-oriented research in educational management. Anchored on the course outcomes, the seminar enhanced participants' skills in identifying research gaps, formulating significant research problems, designing responsive research agendas, conducting systematic literature mapping and synthesis, and utilizing digital research tools to produce scholarly work that informs educational leadership, policy, and institutional development.
The seminar featured Dr. Felomino P. Alba, Dean of the College of Information and Digital Sciences, as the distinguished resource speaker. Drawing from his expertise in research, innovation, and higher education, Dr. Alba underscored the importance of generating evidence-based research that responds to emerging educational challenges while integrating technology and innovation to create meaningful and sustainable solutions.
The seminar-workshop covered four key areas essential to advanced educational management research:
(1) Research Gap Identification and Problem Formulation;
(2) Research Agenda Development;
(3) Literature Review and Synthesis Techniques; and
(4) Mendeley and Reference Management
Throughout the sessions, participants explored practical strategies for identifying significant research opportunities, designing responsive and impactful research agendas, synthesizing scholarly literature, and managing academic references using digital tools such as Mendeley. The discussions emphasized methodological rigor, ethical scholarship, and the effective integration of technology in research processes to enhance the quality, credibility, and impact of academic outputs.
An engaging open forum concluded the program, providing participants with the opportunity to present research concerns, seek expert guidance, and exchange ideas on their ongoing research proposals, theses, and dissertations. The collaborative learning environment encouraged critical thinking, scholarly dialogue, and the translation of research into practice, key competencies expected of future educational leaders and researchers.
Through initiatives such as this, the DSSC Graduate School continues to strengthen its commitment to developing competent scholars, educational leaders, and research practitioners capable of producing innovative, evidence-based solutions that address contemporary educational issues and contribute to institutional and societal advancement.
The seminar-workshop also advances several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education) by promoting quality graduate education, lifelong learning, and research excellence; United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) by encouraging research, innovation, and the utilization of digital technologies to strengthen knowledge generation and academic productivity; United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions) through the promotion of ethical, transparent, and responsible research practices; and United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) by fostering collaboration among graduate students, faculty, researchers, and academic institutions in advancing research, innovation, and educational transformation.
