Russia has indeed taken a sweeping step against what authorities describe as Satanism, but the viral claim that simply “worshipping Satan” automatically brings eight years in prison needs important clarification.

On 23 July 2025, Russia’s Supreme Court designated the so-called “International Satanist Movement” as an extremist organization and prohibited its activities across the country.

The ruling means that activities authorities interpret as participation in or support for the banned movement can potentially trigger Russia’s existing anti-extremism laws. This is where widely circulated claims about lengthy prison sentences originate.

However, simply identifying with Satanism does not automatically mean an eight-year prison sentence. Legal consequences depend on the specific conduct and offence involved.
