Nuestra Señora de la Soledad de Sta. Isabel
The Fishbone Ivory Image of Our Lady of Solitude, formerly venerated as the first image of the Parish of Our Lady of Solitude of Cañacao, Kawit, Cavite.
According to oral history passed down through successive generations, the image of Our Lady of Solitude was originally entrusted to the mother of Maxima Cadiz. However, because the image was made many years ago, the present generations of the family are no longer able to recall or identify the name of Maxima Cadiz’s mother. Consequently, specific details concerning the image’s origin, including the exact year in which it was made and the name of the bishop associated with its commissioning, remain unknown. These details have not been preserved in the family’s oral tradition and, at present, cannot be independently established through the available family accounts.
According to the tradition preserved and transmitted by the present custodians of the image, its origins can be traced to a project reportedly initiated by a bishop at the time. It is said that three images of Our Lady of Solitude were commissioned as part of this project, with the image currently preserved by the family being the smallest of the three. The images were reportedly distributed through a raffle, in which the mother of Maxima Cadiz was said to have won the image. From that time onward, the image was passed down within the family from one generation to another, eventually becoming a cherished object of religious devotion and family heritage.
During the early years of Our Lady of Solitude Parish, the image was brought out for public religious activities. It was also present during the groundbreaking ceremony of the parish, marking its association with the early history and development of the parish community. In the succeeding years, the image continued to be used during the annual processions held in observance of the Feast of Our Lady of Solitude. This tradition continued until 2017, when the image was brought out for the last time for the procession of her feast day.
Since then, the image has remained under the care of the succeeding generations of the family, who continue to preserve it as an important religious and familial heirloom. Its continued preservation reflects the family’s longstanding devotion to Our Lady of Solitude and the image’s enduring connection to the history of the parish community.

History of the Parish of Our Lady of Solitude, Villa Cañacao, Santa Isabel, Kawit, Cavite
The Parish of Our Lady of Solitude, located in Villa Cañacao, Barangay Santa Isabel, Kawit, Cavite, is one of the more recently established parishes under the Diocese of Imus. The parish is likewise preparing to commemorate the twentieth anniversary of its formal establishment as a parish on September 15, 2026, marking two decades of its life as an established ecclesiastical community under the Diocese of Imus.
Although its formal establishment as a parish took place on February 26, 2006, the history of devotion to Our Lady of Solitude in the community can be traced as far back as 1993. Thus, the year 2026 represents not only the twentieth anniversary of its canonical establishment, but also an important occasion to reflect upon the development of the devotion and the community that preceded it. At present, the parish belongs to the Vicariate of Saint Mary Magdalene of the Diocese of Imus (ParishPH 2022).
The beginnings of devotion to Our Lady of Solitude in Villa Cañacao are closely associated with the late Tony G. Nazareno, the owner of the property on which the present place of worship stands. Nazareno's devotion was connected with the longstanding veneration among the people of Cavite of the Virgen de la Soledad de Porta Vaga, the revered image of the Blessed Virgin Mary honored in Cavite City. Because of his profound devotion to Our Lady of Solitude, he desired that the newly developing Christian community would likewise be placed under her patronage (“Our Lady of Porta Vaga” 2026).
The choice of Our Lady of Solitude as the patroness of the parish holds considerable significance within the religious history of Cavite. Devotion to the Virgin of Solitude has long been deeply rooted among the people of Cavite, particularly through the Virgen de la Soledad de Porta Vaga of Cavite City. This Marian image has become an important component of Cavite's religious identity and of the province's maritime and Catholic heritage. Consequently, the establishment of another community dedicated to Our Lady of Solitude in neighboring Kawit should not be regarded as an isolated devotional development, but rather as a continuation of the longstanding Marian tradition inherited by the people of Cavite.
The community of the faithful gradually developed until it attained full parish status. On February 26, 2006, the Parish of Our Lady of Solitude was formally established under the pastoral jurisdiction of the Diocese of Imus. Parish records identify this date as the date of its foundation and designate September 15 as the feast day of its patroness (ParishPH 2022). The twentieth anniversary of this establishment will therefore be commemorated on September 15, 2026, providing an opportunity for the parish community to celebrate two decades of ecclesial life, devotion, and service.
It is therefore important to distinguish between these two significant dates in the history of the parish. The year 1993 marks the beginning of the devotion and of the community that developed around the sacred image, whereas the year 2006 marks its formal and canonical establishment as a parish. This distinction is essential for an accurate historical account of the parish. The year 2026, in turn, marks twenty years since its establishment and serves as an important milestone in the continuing history of the community.
The Parish of Our Lady of Solitude belongs to the Vicariate of Saint Mary Magdalene, which brings together Catholic communities in Kawit and Cavite City. Among the communities within this vicariate are the historic Parish of Saint Mary Magdalene in Kawit and the Parish of San Roque in Cavite City, which is the home of the renowned Virgen de la Soledad de Porta Vaga. The parish in Villa Cañacao is therefore situated within a geographical and ecclesiastical milieu that has long been enriched by devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, particularly under the title of Our Lady of Solitude (“St. Mary Magdalene Church [Kawit]” 2026).
The history of the Parish of Our Lady of Solitude is not merely the history of a building or of a particular date of foundation. Rather, it is a history of the continuity of faith. What began in 1993 through the devotion of Tony G. Nazareno eventually developed into an established parish community in 2006. In this manner, Villa Cañacao became one of the newer homes of an ancient Marian devotion that has long formed part of the religious identity and spiritual heritage of Cavite.
In the present day, the Parish of Our Lady of Solitude remains a living expression of the Catholic faith in Santa Isabel, Kawit. Its significance cannot be measured merely by the age of its place of worship, but rather by the faith and devotion embodied in its patroness and in the sacred image entrusted to the community. The celebration of its twentieth anniversary in 2026 provides an opportunity to commemorate not only the formal establishment of the parish, but also the decades of devotion, prayer, and communal faith that preceded and sustained it.
From the arrival of the sacred image in 1993 to the formal establishment of the parish in 2006, and ultimately to the celebration of its twentieth anniversary in 2026, its history bears witness to the continuing devotion of the people of Cavite to the Blessed Virgin Mary under her sorrowful, silent, and contemplative title of Nuestra Señora de la Soledad Our Lady of Solitude. As the community marks two decades of parish life, the venerated image remains at the heart of its spiritual identity, serving as a visible expression of the enduring Marian devotion that continues to unite generations of the faithful in Villa Cañacao.
