Mayon Volcano is famous for its near-perfect cone shape, but it has also contributed to an important Filipino scientific discovery. Researchers from University of the Philippines Los Baños collected soil samples from Malilipot, Albay in 2021 and isolated dozens of bacterial strains living within the volcano's unique volcanic soils.

Among the 30 strains identified, one bacterium initially labeled Streptomyces sp. A1-08 attracted particular attention. Laboratory experiments showed that it produced compounds with antibiotic activity and exhibited potential anti-colorectal cancer properties in preliminary tests. After several years of additional analysis, researchers formally described it as a previously unknown species and named it Streptomyces mayonensis in honor of the volcano where it was found.

In Microbiology and Biotechnology, members of the genus Streptomyces are especially important because they are among the world's most prolific producers of natural antibiotics. Many medicines used today, including antibiotics and other pharmaceutical compounds, originated from Streptomyces species discovered in soil.

Scientists emphasize that the discovery of Streptomyces mayonensis does not mean a cure for cancer has been found. The observed biological activities were obtained under laboratory conditions, and extensive research would be required before any potential medical application could be developed. Most promising compounds identified during early screening never become approved treatments.

Nevertheless, the discovery highlights the immense scientific value of Philippine biodiversity. Unique ecosystems, including volcanic environments, may contain microorganisms capable of producing novel compounds useful for future medicine, agriculture, and biotechnology.

From one of the Philippines' most iconic volcanoes emerged a previously unknown species of bacterium, demonstrating that important scientific discoveries can be hidden in places as ordinary as a handful of soil.
