Synergy Marine Group and Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) signed a memorandum of understanding in Kochi on 22 September to jointly pursue shipbuilding, repair and conversion projects in India.
The MoU was signed by Ajay Chaudhry, Co-CEO Ship Management, Synergy Marine Group, and Rajesh Gopalakrishnan, Director (Technical), CSL, in the presence of our Group CEO Jesper Kristensen and Jose V J, Chairman and Managing Director of CSL.
Incorporated in 1972, CSL is Indiaโs largest public-sector shipyard by dock capacity and builds and repairs vessels for commercial and naval customers.
In February, it signed a contract with CMA CGM for six 1,700-TEU LNG dual-fuel feeder containerships. Its 310-metre dry dock expands its capacity to accommodate larger vessels.
๐ค The collaboration combines Synergyโs engineering, project management and operating experience with CSLโs shipbuilding and repair capabilities.
For Synergy, total cost of ownership is central to this collaboration. Decisions about equipment, maintenance access and commissioning influence operating costs and reliability for decades.
Bringing operating experience into these decisions helps address issues while there is still scope to change the design.
As Jesper Kristensen said: โA vesselโs long-term performance is shaped well before it enters service. Our role is to carry the ownerโs requirements through engineering and project ex*****on into the years of operation that follow.โ
๐ Our current newbuilding assignments cover more than 150 vessels at 20 shipyards across six countries. Our conversion experience includes LNG carrier-to-FSRU projects, from feasibility and engineering through commissioning and subsequent technical management.
Thank you to the Cochin Shipyard Ltd leadership and teams for their hospitality in Kochi and their work in bringing this collaboration together.

Nord Luna was a Panamax bulk carrier looked after from a small office in Chennai. She has since changed hands and names, and it is good to see her still in service.
Captain Rajesh Unni founded Synergy that year. In the first Chennai office, colleagues worked together in one room and spoke directly across roles. Captain Unni led with empathy, listening to people and taking them seriously whatever their position.
Today, more than 750 ships are in our care across bulk, tanker, container, gas and offshore fleets. Among them is MAERSK FLINDERS, a methanol dual-fuel container ship owned by NKS Canopus of the Nissen Kaiun Singapore Group. She is very different from Nord Luna, but the relationship behind both vessels spans twenty years.
โOwners do not entrust us with a ship because of where we sit in a league table,โ says Jesper Kristensen, our Group CEO. โThey want to know who is accountable for her, whether her crew will have the support they need, and how our decisions will affect her performance and total cost of ownership over time.โ
Our thanks begin with our seafarers and the colleagues ashore who support them. We are grateful to Captain Katsuya Abe and Nissen Kaiun for entrusting a new company with its first ship and for their continued confidence. To every other customer who has placed a vessel in our care over these twenty years: thank you for that responsibility, for working with us and for helping us improve. ๐ข

National Maritime Week is underway in the Philippines, and our SGOI colleagues have been taking part in activities in Cebu and Iloilo.
Observed from 20โ27 September, this year's National Maritime Week carries the theme โFrom Policy to Practice: Powering Maritime Excellence.โ It is also the IMO's World Maritime Day theme for 2026โ2027, with an emphasis on turning maritime policy and commitments into practical action.
For our colleagues in Cebu, that began at the shoreline.
On 19 September, colleagues from SGOI Cebu joined the International Coastal Cleanup in Lapu-Lapu City under the local theme โClean Seas for Resilient Communities.โ
Alongside participants from government, the maritime industry and the wider community, they spent the morning helping clear waste from the coastal area. The photographs tell the story particularly well: this was not simply about being present for an event, but about getting involved and doing the work.
Two days later, the focus moved to Iloilo, where colleagues joined the opening activities for National Maritime Week.
Christina Amparado, PIC โ Iloilo Branch, and Capt. Francis Alian, an active seafarer, were joined by Makati colleagues Nick Galve, Henry Mina and Shiela Aniversario.
The program began with a Mass bringing members of the local maritime community together. Afterwards, our colleagues joined a Walk for a Cause organised by Women in Maritime Philippines (WIMAPHIL) โ Western Visayas Chapter, alongside representatives from across the maritime community.
The two activities were very different.
In Cebu, colleagues were working along the coast. In Iloilo, shore colleagues and a serving seafarer were walking alongside others from the industry.
But there is a connection between them, and it sits neatly with this year's Maritime Week theme.
โFrom Policy to Practiceโ is about what happens after principles, standards and commitments have been agreed. Ultimately, they depend on people choosing to put them into practiceโin our industry, in our workplaces and in the communities around us. IMO similarly describes the 2026โ2027 theme as focusing attention on implementation and the people who turn maritime policy into action.
For our SGOI colleagues in Cebu, Iloilo and Makati, National Maritime Week offered a very local way of being part of that wider maritime community.
Thank you to everyone who represented SGOI and gave their time.

For many of our seafarers from Central Visayas, training does not need to mean travelling far from home.
From 27 to 31 July, our Cebu office hosted its seventh Pre-Joining Familiarization program, bringing together 32 seafarers for Crew Safety Training, Officer Safety Training and MARPOL/VECP familiarization before they joined their vessels.
Twenty colleagues participated in the Crew and Officer Safety Training sessions, while 12 attended the MARPOL and Vessel Environmental Compliance Plan program.
The sessions were led by C/E W***y Balot, Training Manager, and Capt. Marlon Malong, Marine Manager. What matters about program, like this is not simply the number of courses completed. They give seafarers the opportunity to refresh procedures, ask questions, discuss situations they may encounter onboard and reconnect with the standards expected before returning to sea.
Holding the training in Cebu also makes that preparation more accessible for colleagues from Central Visayas. It brings learning closer to where our seafarers live and gives our regional office a more direct role in supporting them before they join their vessels.
For those of us in Cebu, that is an important part of the work. A seafarer should not have to wait until reaching the gangway to start thinking about the next assignment. Good preparation begins earlier, ashore, with the right conversations and the right support.
Our thanks to C/E W***y, Capt. Marlon, our Cebu colleagues and, most importantly, the 32 seafarers who took part.
The seventh program is now complete. The real value will be seen in how that preparation carries forward onboard.
