In a rented apartment in Hong Kong in late 1897 or early 1898, a Filipino woman named Marcela Agoncillo sat at a sewing table with her daughter Lorenza and her friend Delfina Herbosa de Natividad, and sewed the first Philippine flag from silk and gold thread — the flag that would be unfurled publicly for the first time on June 12, 1898 in Kawit, Cavite, and that flies, with modifications, above every Philippine government building today. She did it with a needle. She did it by hand. She did it in exile. And history almost forgot to say her name. 🇵🇭💛🪡

Marcela Mariño Agoncillo was born in Taal, Batangas in 1860, and was living in Hong Kong with her husband Felipe Agoncillo — the Philippine revolutionary government's representative abroad — when Emilio Aguinaldo sent instructions for the design of the Philippine flag that the newly declared republic would need for its proclamation of independence. Aguinaldo's instructions specified the flag's essential elements: a bicolor field of blue and red, a white equilateral triangle at the hoist containing a golden sun with eight rays — one for each of the eight provinces that first revolted against Spain in 1896, namely Batangas, Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, Manila, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, and Tarlac — and three five-pointed golden stars at the triangle's corners representing the three major island groups of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Working from these instructions, Marcela Agoncillo, her daughter Lorenza, and Delfina Herbosa de Natividad — the niece of José Rizal — sewed the first Philippine flag by hand in their Hong Kong apartment, completing it in time for it to be carried back to the Philippines and unfurled at the proclamation ceremony in Kawit on June 12, 1898. The flag that flew over Kawit that afternoon — the first Philippine flag ever displayed publicly — was the direct physical product of Marcela Agoncillo's needlework in a rented room in colonial Hong Kong. 🕯️🌿
