Ngayong 𝗶𝗸𝗮-𝟮𝟭 𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗲𝘁𝘆𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗿𝗲, ginugunita natin ang 𝟱𝟰 𝘁𝗮𝗼𝗻 mula nang lagdaan ang Proclamation No. 1081 noong 1972 na nagdeklara ng Martial Law sa buong Pilipinas. Sa panahong ito, naitala ang malulubhang paglabag sa karapatang pantao at iba pang karanasan na nag-iwan ng malalim na marka sa kasaysayan ng bansa.

Ngunit para sa atin ngayon, ang paggunita nito ay hindi lamang tungkol sa pagbabalik sa isang madilim na kabanata ng nakaraan. Isa rin itong pagkakataon upang tanungin ang ating sarili—𝗸𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗼 𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗮𝘄𝗶𝗻 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝗮 𝗺𝗴𝗮 𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗻𝗴 𝗸𝗮𝘀𝗮𝘆𝘀𝗮𝘆𝗮𝗻?

Bilang mga 𝗜𝘀𝗸𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗮𝘆𝗮𝗻 at mga kabataang naghahanda para sa larangan ng 𝗘𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴, bawat linya ng kuryente, sistema ng komunikasyon, kagamitan, gusali, at teknolohiyang ating matututuhang likhain ay may epekto sa buhay ng mga tao. At ang pagiging isang inhinyero ay hindi lamang dapat sukatin sa kung 𝗴𝗮𝗮𝗻𝗼 𝗸𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗼 𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗲𝗸𝗻𝗶𝗸𝗮𝗹 𝗻𝗮 𝗸𝗮𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗻, kundi kung paano natin ito ginagamit para sa kapakanan ng lipunan. Dahil kailangan munang matutong maging mga taong may 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗮𝗱, 𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝘂𝘁𝗮𝗻, 𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗮𝘀𝗮𝗸𝗶𝘁 𝘀𝗮 𝗯𝗮𝘆𝗮𝗻.

Lalo na’t ang pagiging 𝗜𝘀𝗸𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗮𝘆𝗮𝗻 ay hindi lamang pribilehiyong makapag-aral. 𝗜𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝘆 𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝘂𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗿𝗶, 𝗺𝗮𝗴𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗴𝗼𝗹 𝘀𝗮 𝗸𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗻, 𝗮𝘁 𝗴𝗮𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗸𝗮𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮 𝘀𝗮 𝗸𝗮𝗽𝘄𝗮’𝘁 𝘀𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗮𝘆𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗻.

At lalo itong mahalaga sa kasalukuyan, kung kailan nananatiling bahagi at malaking sakit ng ating lipunan ang korapsyon, pang-aabuso sa kapangyarihan, at iba’t ibang anyo ng kawalang-pananagutan. Bilang mga 𝗘𝗘𝘀𝗸𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗿, hindi dapat natin hayaan na maging panibagong bahagi lamang tayo ng bulok na sistemang ito—hindi hahayaang maging mga propesyunal na matututo lamang na manahimik o makisangkot sa mga gawaing alam nating mali.

Sa halip, dala natin ang pananagutang gamitin ang edukasyong ipinagkaloob sa atin upang maging bahagi ng pagbabago. Ang maging tapat sa ating trabaho, mapanuri sa ating mga desisyon, at may tapang na manindigan. Sapagkat balang araw, hindi lamang mga proyekto at sistema ang mahahawakan natin sa’ting mga kamay, kundi bahagi rin ang kinabukasan ng mga taong pinag-ugatan at pinagkautangan natin ng ating edukasyon.

𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁 𝘀𝗮 𝗹𝗮𝗵𝗮𝘁, 𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶 𝗱𝗮𝗽𝗮𝘁 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗽𝗼𝘀 𝘀𝗮 𝗽𝗮𝗴-𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗹𝗮 𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗮𝗻. Ang bawat may napatunayang pananagutan, anumang pangalan, posisyon, o impluwensiya, ay hindi dapat makaiwas sa hustisya dahil lamang lumipas na ang panahon. Ang mga paglabag sa karapatan at pang-aabuso sa kapangyarihan ay dapat kilalanin, alalahanin, at panagutin sa paraang naaayon sa batas.

On September 21, 1972, Ferdinand Marcos Sr. signed Proclamation No. 1081, declaring Martial Law in the Philippines. In the years that followed, thousands of Filipinos became victims of human rights violations, including imprisonment, torture, killings, and enforced disappearances.

Fifty-four years later, the photographs may have faded and the witnesses may have grown older, but the history remains.
