[PROVOST: ACADEMIC BREAK ON NOVEMBER 16-18 AND MAKE-UP DAYS]

Hi, Lasallians!

In view of the declaration by Malacanang that November 16-18 are Special Non-Working Holidays in Metro Manila because of the ASEAN Summit, and considering that many students of the Laguna campus are from Metro Manila, the consequent academic break on November 16-18 shall apply to both the Manila and Laguna campuses at the senior high school, undergraduate, and graduate levels.

Classes in the Integrated School in Laguna shall proceed as scheduled.

The Manila campus shall be closed on these days. Access to the senior high school and college sections of the Laguna campus is restricted. Work is likewise suspended for employees assigned to these sections of the Laguna campus.

Because of this unprogrammed academic break, October 17 shall be a make-up day for laboratory courses following the Monday schedule, and October 24 a make-up day for laboratory courses following the Tuesday schedule, on both the Manila and Laguna campuses at the senior high school, undergraduate, and graduate levels.

Martial Law does not feel distant when so much of what transpired then still permeates our daily lives. 54 years since its declaration, we remember those killed, tortured, unlawfully detained, forcibly disappeared, censored, and silenced under the dictatorship; the families who continue to pursue justice; and the Filipinos who resisted—and still resist—repression at great personal cost.

We see its unfinished legacy in corruption that determines whether families can afford food, children remain in school, patients receive care, and communities are protected from disaster. Many survive with less while the greedy thrive with little restraint. Power is passed among political dynasties, while institutions meant to serve the people are weakened in service of those who already hold the most. The dictatorship may have ended, but the conditions that enabled it did not disappear.

For Lasallians, this history is also our own. Lorenzo “Ka Tanny” Tañada and Jose “Ka Pepe” Diokno opposed the dictatorship and defended its victims. Sr. Mariani Dimaranan, SFIC, documented human rights abuses and worked with political detainees and their families. Immanuel “Imo” Obispo, a DLSU scholar and student journalist, was killed at only twenty after joining the anti-dictatorship movement.

They and many others placed their safety, freedom, and lives on the line for human rights and justice. We cannot invoke their names simply to claim our pride. Their example asks what we will defend, whom we will stand beside, and what their courage requires of us now.

This week, we invite the Lasallian community to listen, reflect, examine the records, witness these stories, and ask harder questions about responsibility. Accountability is not a matter for history alone. It remains a demand of the present and a responsibility we bear for one another.
