๐๐ฟ๐ป๐ฒ๐๐๐ผ ๐ ๐ฎ๐๐ฎ, at ๐๐น๐ธ๐ฎ๐น๐ฑ๐ฒ ๐๐๐ด๐๐ฟ๐ถ๐ผ ๐๐ฏ๐ฒ๐๐ผ sa Binalbagan, Negros Occidental upang buuin ang gerilya sa isla. Kinilala ang kanilang pangkat ni ๐๐ผ๐น. Makalipas ang isang taon, nireorganisa ito ni ๐๐ฒ๐ป๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐น ๐๐ผ๐๐ด๐น๐ฎ๐ ๐ ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐๐ฟ๐๐ต๐๐ฟ bilang ๐ฆ๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ต ๐ ๐ถ๐น๐ถ๐๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ ๐๐ถ๐๐๐ฟ๐ถ๐ฐ๐, na patuloy na lumaban hanggang sa pagtatapos ng World War II noong 1945.

Tuberculosis caused an estimated 40,000 deaths annually among Filipinos during the American colonial period, making it a major public health crisis that required urgent and organized intervention. In response, the Philippine Islands Anti-Tuberculosis Society was created as a landmark initiative in Philippine health history. It represented the first large-scale partnership between American colonial authorities and Filipino elites aimed at addressing the widespread impact of the disease. This development also reflected a growing recognition by colonial officials that effective disease control depended on the involvement of local communities rather than relying solely on centralized, top-down approaches.
The Society was established in 1910 under the leadership of Eleanor Franklin Egan, an American journalist and war correspondent who became its first president. She was married to Martin Egan, co-editor of the Manila Times, and had significant experience reporting on conflicts in Asia and Europe for major publications such as the Saturday Evening Post. Her appointment illustrated the colonial practice of placing influential American figures in leadership roles while still promoting Filipino participation in public health efforts.
The founding of the organization laid the foundation for long-term tuberculosis control efforts in the Philippines. Today, the Philippine Tuberculosis Society, Inc. continues this mission as the countryโs largest private NGO dedicated to TB prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, operating multiple chest clinics and collaborating with agencies like the Department of Health and the World Health Organization. Despite over a century of efforts, tuberculosis remains a serious health concern, causing more than 60 deaths daily and hundreds of thousands of new cases each year. This ongoing struggle highlights both the complexity of TB control and the lasting importance of the cooperative approach first introduced in 1910.
