When Penny Hardaway entered the league in 1993, many saw him as the “next Jordan.”

He was tall for a guard (6’7”), smooth with the ball, athletic, and had a mix of scoring and playmaking that reminded people of MJ’s early years. Nike leaned heavily into this comparison too. In fact, when Jordan briefly retired in 1993, Nike used Penny in commercials alongside “Lil’ Penny” (voiced by Chris Rock) to help carry the brand.

What makes the connection even deeper is that Jordan himself admired Penny’s game. In the 1996 NBA All-Star Game (MJ’s first after coming back), Hardaway was voted in as the Eastern Conference’s starting guard over Jordan, which shows just how highly fans thought of Penny at the time. They even matched up in the 1996 playoffs—Jordan’s Bulls versus Penny’s Magic—and it became a symbolic “passing of the torch” moment that ultimately didn’t happen because injuries derailed Hardaway’s career.
