CONVICTION na nga ba ang patutunguhan ng impeachment trial ni Vice President Sara Duterte? Habang nagpapatuloy ang paglilitis, mas umiigting ang usapin tungkol sa mga ebidensyang iniharap, depensa ng kampo ng Bise Presidente, at maging sa kinakailangang bilang ng boto para sa conviction. Tatlong dating Supreme Court justices ang nagpahayag kamakailan na hindi awtomatikong fixed sa 16 ang kinakailangang boto sa ilang sitwasyon—isang usaping kailangan pang resolbahin ng impeachment court.

IMPEACHMENT UPDATE: BASTE DUTERTE SUBPOENAED
One of the latest developments in VP Sara Duterte's impeachment trial is the subpoena issued to Davao City Mayor Sebastian "Baste" Duterte. The prosecution says it will also ask the Senate Impeachment Court to treat him as a hostile witness.
So, why Baste?
The answer is found in Gencorp Industries.
Gencorp is among the companies identified in VP Sara Duterte's declared business interests. The prosecution is now examining whether Gencorp had transactions with the Davao City government, and Baste is being called because he was the city's mayor during the relevant period. The subpoena covers city-government transactions and related official records.
That does not mean Baste is being accused of wrongdoing. He is a witness, not the respondent. His relevance comes from his official position and whatever personal or official knowledge he may have regarding the transactions, not simply from being Sara Duterte's brother.
And this is where the testimony becomes important.
The prosecution is not merely asking, "Did Gencorp transact with Davao City?" Government records can answer that. The more important question is whether Baste has knowledge that can help explain the nature, circumstances, and context of those transactions, particularly because Gencorp appears in Sara Duterte's declared business interests.
The hostile-witness issue is a separate procedural matter. If the Impeachment Court grants the prosecution's request, the prosecution may use leading questions in examining Baste. But being declared hostile does not mean the court has found him untruthful or guilty of anything.
Ultimately, Baste's testimony is only one piece of the evidentiary puzzle.
The real issue remains Sara Duterte's own declarations, her business interests, the government transactions involving those interests, and whether the evidence establishes the allegations under Article II.
So yes, Baste is relevant. Not because he is Sara's brother. But because he was the Mayor of Davao City and the prosecution wants to know what he knows about Gencorp's dealings with the city government.

Sinabi ni Sen. Robin Padilla na final na ang desisyon niyang hindi na tumakbo sa elective post sa 2028. Ayon sa senador, tatapusin niya ang kanyang termino at plano nilang mag-asawa na manirahan sa ibang bansa, kabilang sa mga pinagpipilian ang Brunei at Malaysia, upang mapalaki ang kanilang anak sa Islamic na paraan. Sinabi rin niya: “Hindi ako bagay dito. Iba ang takbo ng politika ng Pilipinas, hindi siya para sa akin.”

Mainit na usapin ang pahayag ni Atty. Jimmy Bondoc tungkol sa posibilidad ng pagtakbo ni Vice President Sara Duterte sa 2028. Ayon sa pahayag na makikita sa News5 graphic noong September 19, sinabi ni Bondoc na kahit ma-impeach si VP Sara at magkaroon ng disqualification, sa tingin niya ay nanaisin pa rin ng kanyang mga tagasuporta na patakbuhin siya.
Pero ano nga ba ang sinasabi ng 1987 Constitution kapag ang isang impeachable official ay na-convict at na-disqualify sa paghawak ng public office? Posible pa bang tumakbo sa eleksyon, o magiging legal na hadlang ang disqualification?
