THANK YOU, COACH! 🫡
The University of the East (UE) has announced that Chris Gavina is no longer head coach of the Red Warriors, naming assistant coach and former standout player Paolo Hubalde as acting head coach for the rest of UAAP Season 89 men’s basketball tournament.
UE President and Chief Academic Officer Zosimo Battad thanked Gavina for the time and effort he gave to the student-athletes and the program, adding that the school respects his decision to pursue other opportunities and credits him for sharing his professional experience.
For his part, the former head coach thanked UE for the opportunity to be part of the team, saying he values the bonds he built with the players, coaches, staff, and the wider UE community, and hopes the team continues to build on what they started together.
Stepping in as head coach in February 2025, Chris Gavina succeeded Jack Santiago, whose squad went 6-8 and narrowly missed the Final Four, but the results did not follow, as UE finished 0-14 in Season 88 and opened Season 89 with losses to the Ateneo Blue Eagles and the NU Bulldogs, leaving him winless in 16 games and the team on a 22-game losing streak.
His stint was also marked by controversy, as he was suspended for four games in October 2025 after a heated rant against the referees following UE's 110-111 overtime loss to the DLSU Green Archers.
UE also lost key players this offseason, including Precious Momowei, Wello Lingolingo, Nico Mulingtapang, and Dylan Despi, while assistant coaches Alex Cabagnot and Nick Demusis also stepped down.
Hubalde made his debut on the bench on September 26 against the FEU Tamaraws, with UE still seeking its first win in two years.

MERON PA RIN GANDA ANG BUHAY, PWEDE PANG MANGARAP 🙌🏻 🤸🏻♀️
The University of the East (UE) men’s basketball team suffered another setback against the Far Eastern University (FEU) Tamaraws, while the women’s basketball team fell short in its opening game against the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigresses at the SM Mall of Asia Arena on Saturday, September 26.
The Red Warriors got the scoring going early, guard Mo Tañedo delivered a strong offensive showing, but UE's defense had yet to find its footing, letting FEU seize an early 23-15 edge.
UE settled into better rhythm in the second quarter, with Gene Carillo and Toper Lagat combining for key baskets to stay within striking distance, FEU's attack remained too sharp, sending the Red Warriors into the break trailing, 29-43.
Coming out of halftime, UE pushed to close the gap with better passing and sharper court play, but the Recto-based squad could not sustain the pressure long enough, and the deficit continued to grow through the fourth quarter, ending the game at 70-93.
Off the court, the Red Warriors underwent a major shift in leadership, as assistant coach Dean Paulo Hubalde stepped in as interim head coach for the game following the resignation of head coach Chris Gavina.
Gavina's departure also prompted fellow assistant coaches Alex Cabagnot and Nick Demusis to tender their own resignations, leaving Hubalde to hold the team.
In an exclusive interview with RedWire, UEMBT team manager Jean Alabanza addressed the coaching transition, noting that Hubalde has now taken on the head coach role.
"Definitely, there will be changes given that there will be a different coach. Changes will not be there right away. Game by game it could apply," he said.
"Coach Pao is part of the team. He knows how the team works and this is no difference from what he does. The team is still in good hands," he continued.
The Red Warriors will look to snap its losing streak against the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers on Wednesday, September 30, at 3 p.m. at Ateneo Blue Eagle Gym.
Meanwhile, the Lady Warriors suffered a tough 58-103 loss to the UST Growling Tigresses.
In the first half, guards Sy Onate and Roshelle Lumibao led UE’s scoring attempts, while guards Rachel Lacayanga and guard Kezza Buscar provided the offensive support.
Lady Warriors carried its offense into the second half with Lacayanga scoring on consecutive attempts and Onate’s back-to-back three-points to cut the deficit to 46-62.
Buscar and Ronquillo made key defensive plays, but UST responded with a strong offense to take the lead.
The Lady Warriors continued to attack in the fourth quarter, with center Kate Cruz hitting a three-pointer while Onate and Lacayanga added conseutive two-pointers.
Despite struggling defensively against the Golden Tigresses, UE sustained offense and continued to fight until the final buzzer.
The Lady Warriors will look to snap their losing streak against the De La Salle University (DLSU) Lady Archers on Sunday, October 4, at 9 a.m. at the Ateneo Blue Eagle Gym.
